Just wondering why Squeaky Beach, Vic squeaks? Is the sand different or does it have something special in it?

Does the sand have a special component or chemical? Or is it just the name as all sand kind of squeaks?
Squeaky Beach, Victoria

i remember going there when i was a kid (47now) it is the only beach that i have ever been to that makes noise like that & i have been to a lot of beaches.I seem to remember somebody saying it is caused by what the sand comprises of more rock than shell OR more shell than rock

Hi,

I was at Squeaky Beach about 2 years ago. It is simply the incredibly fine sand that makes the squeaking noise as you step on it. The pressure off your foot causes the sand to squeak as the grains rub against each other. It is actually an annoying sound after a while!

It must be said though that this sand does squeak more so than most!

Fantastic beach, although I must admit the water was somewhat cold!

I've never been to the beach you talk of in Victoria but I have been to Whitsunday Island in Qld where the beach does squeak and this I was told was because the sand is made of 100% "cilica" which is one of the purest types of sand available, ie it is almost the same quality as zirconia which is the cheap version of diamonds....

this type of sand is also so bright and white that it hurts your eyes to see without sunglasses...

Its great to take photos lying in this sand and makes the colour of the sea look very blue.. I love it and haven't seen anything like it except in the Whitsundays...

Ummm I live in QLD and the majority of the sand I have walked on squeeks depending on how dry and hot it is I guess. I guess they couldnt think of a better name. It may even be a different reason its called that.

I know that the fine sand has something to do with it, but also I think there is a large ammount of silica in it (from what my 7th grade science teacher said). He may have just been trying to sound smart though - he had a bad habbit of that.

I was at Wilson's Prom and Squeaky Beach abt a month ago. Squeaky Beach is unique because the sand particles are all the exact same size, shape and make-up. On normal beaches, there is greater variability in the size/shape of the sand particles. The fact that the particles are all the same means that the beach squeaks much more than others. It's pretty cool that Squeaky Beach is the way it is, whereas the other beaches at Wilson's Prom are just normal...

Probably imatation like everything else in Victoria.
