its getting pretty expensive here in brisbane. cost of living is sky rocketing. the closer you get to the city the more expensive it gets. some good suburbs in qld would be toowong area near the river (western suburbs) if you want to be close to the city and towards ipswich if you dont mind being out a bit further (way out west) its cheap out there heaps of kiwis too. im in morningside on the southside which is an ok area. i think most kiwis go to forest lake. check out whereis.com.au to check out these suburbs in relation to the city

A quiet place great for families with relatively low cost of living is Adelaide. It's not the most exciting place in the world so I wouldn't particularly suggest it for young singles. It is laid back and relaxed, less traffic than other cities. Housing is fairly affordable and there is plenty of work. It's a nice place to live.

It is also worth considering large regional towns in any state, eg Toowoomba, Bathurst, Wollongong, Albany, Mt Gambier etc if you would like the quiet life, still with plenty of work available. It depends of course what sort of work you are looking for.

The places you mentioned: QLD, NSW and SA all have great places to raise a family, and there are both cheap and expensive parts in all those states. Depends where you can get jobs that you like. QLD a bit more laidback than Sydney. Melbourne friendly. Sth Australia good. Sorry I am being pretty general. I dont know what else to say.

Basically you can't go wrong, just go with your gut feeling.

You don't say what type of work you do and you don't say what type of climate your looking for. Sunshine Coast is a great life style and laid back and in fact they are planning on capping the intake of people moving here, because there's so many coming.

Me personally do like Queensland..though I have only seen surrounding areas of Cairns...I do recommend the Pilbara W.A..places like Karratharra ...plenty of work..on the ocean..must admit the rentals
are high...great weather all year round...

its rather expensive in all oz city's, rent is on average $350 - $450 for a basic town house/unit plus everything else has gone up in price recently, but if you want a laid back fun place, Melbourne is the place to be.

My boss is a maori kiwi, and she and her family live about half way between Brisbane and Ipswich, Queensland. They seem to have a fairly large group of Kiwis in that area. Ipswich is west of Brisbane about 35kms.

The benefit of that is that the shops have catered for Kiwi tastes, and families can form cultural groups if they want to.

The cost of houses in that area are around $350,000 (average house) to $600,000 (pretty flash place) Australian to buy, or about $300 to $450 per week to rent.

Just avoid Collingwood Park (Redbank) area as several houses have started to subside due to old mines.

If you choose to go anywhere that is touristy then you can expect to pay heaps to live there. Eg Gold Coast, Noosa, far North Qld, Sydney,

Your choice will depend on whether you want to live in a coastal, rural, outback, or city setting, and what your budget is.
Australians are generally very friendly and laid back wherever you live, as long as you are friendly too.
