L BELIEVE THE GREENS & GREENIES ARE TO BLAME FOR VIC BUSHFIRES DO YOU AGREE?

No caused but certainly added to the ferocity
Their blanket (almost fundamentalist) opposition to controlled burns and hazard reduction must expose their hard line policies and practices. If Bob Brown wants to say I told you so on climate change then he needs to accept the fact that greens platform also made things much worse here

I Live In Paradise
yes

but also this is a national tragedy and at this stage we should be blaming no one

where were the greenies did not see one of them defending there lousy policies

tamara m
For the severity of them, yes.
The australian fauna has adapted over the years to being burned and their policy of total opposition to it has meant that there has been a build up of flammable dead matter whcih would otherwise have not been there.
Also their refusal to allow people to clear firebreaks cost many lives, the evidence is present with that fellow who cleared the illegal firebreak around his property and was the only house in his street not dmaged by the fires.

redhzkingswood
As to the severity, yes, but the problem is the "Council" greenies, who get elected on to city and shire councils and sway them with ridiculous restrictions. One area I know well, they won't let you clear the trees more than 2 metres around your house when you build, and the type of tree is highly flammable. If a fire took hold in that area, there would be many lives and property lost.
I won't name the suburbs, in case some lunatic fire bug is reading and decides to torch them.
Smokers are as much responsible for starting fires as anyone, and on a Total Fire Ban day should be fined more than on a non ban day for dropping them out the car window, including murder charges if death arises.

I would be really interested if anyone can show me where any mainstream green organisation (Green Party, Wilderness Society etc) has opposed scientifically based controlled burning. The "Blame the Greenies" hysteria is not based on any evidence other than "everyone knows", which is usually a label for uninformed prejudice.

Universal Love+Truth
There should be building codes in place, in the very first place, regarding the type of building and the clearance distance from the edge of the forest. And the roads should be wide enough(4 lanes at least) to allow emergency vehicles and evacuation vehicles to use, both directions. Houses should not be built near easily-combustible vegetation(e.g. eucalyptus trees) and as far as possible be of fire-retardant materials. To cut too much costs is just not sensible.
But the Greenies Organizations should not be too rigid or heavy-handed in certain cases where some buildings are at high risks. Perhaps house-owners could pay a small sum for fire-breaks services.

Cecil
From the Wilderness Society Web page:
"Fuel reduction burning has an important place in the fire management toolbox, and we support its place in scientifically underpinned fire management for the protection of life, property and the environment."

“On behalf of everyone here at The Wilderness Society, I wish to express our support and deepest sympathies to the individuals, families and communities who have been devastated by the Victorian bushfires over the past two weeks, and in particular the heartbreaking events of February 7 and 8.â€
Through our many members, supporters and colleagues who live in the ravaged areas, we have developed a close association with the affected communities, especially in Marysville, Healesville and St Andrews. Our thoughts, condolences and best wishes go out to all of you.

As part of the bushfire response, The Wilderness Society encourages people to help by donating to:

1. Red Cross Bushfire Appeal - Funds go to the victims of the bushfires, providing emergency food, clothing and shelter. To donate call 1800 811 700 or visit: www.redcross.org.au

2. Wildlife Victoria - Funds help pay for bandages, treatment, medicines and food for injured wildlife, for trained wildlife carers on the ground and enable purchase of vital medical equipment and supplies for the animals. To donate visit: www.wildlifevictoria.org.au"

Its all too easy to blame "the greenies" when there is a bushfire. The reasons for the black saturday fires is far more complex than whether or not hazard reduction was carried out. Hazard reduction is only just one component in bushfire mitigation. We should put aside any blame for the time being and focus our efforts towards the victims. There will be a Royall Commission and a Coronial. I think they are far better equipped to investigate this matter than Yahoo Answers is.

PLANET ROGUE-POP: 1
No, i dont agree - I blame the arsonist and mother nature...

No amount of backburning etc would have stopped the wild fires in Marysville :(
