Live in the USA or Australia ?

I have a problem. I am Australian but have lived in the USA for the last 8 years. My son is going to high school soon and I think he is better off in the Australian school system because of the zero tolerance policy here (real ridiculous). The other problem is my job is real good here and I have no financial issues. I have a big home on 1.5 acres which would cost millions in Sydney but not millions here. If I go back to Australia I fear that I could be unemployed for a short while and have to live in a not so great suburb. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO - Is Australia still a good place to live well ?

Stay where you are and look at other education options fro you son.

Look around for school alternatives instead of moving your family from a place where you are happy & successful. Not all schools have ridiculous policies.

You may also discover that Australian schools are infected by the same "zero tolerance" policies as many US schools.

Many Americans have made their homes here in Australia because of the excellent health care system, the absence of irearms in the general community and the laid back lifestyle.

Unfortunately, recent years have seen an increase in the influence of the religious fringe dwellers which has resulted in some community tension, but Australia is still a great place to live.

Not sure what 'zero tolerance' means in a school situation, but Australian schools usually have peer support programmes and aim to provide a safe atmosphere for their students. Whether it works is partly up to the parents, of course.

Property is expensive, of course, so you may have to reconsider your accomodation needs, or be prepared to commute as many of us do, daily from our not so great suburbs. Anywhere can be nice if you make it so!

Basically, Australia is still a great place, whether it is so for you depends largely on what you bring to the equation!

Best of luck! :-)

Edited to say:

Sky, what is your problem? There's more to America than Casey Kasem, you twit. And Australia is no more anti-American than anti-Italian, most immigrants everywhere find people a bit strange at first.

Superhot: I live in a large two storey house with a swimming pool, water tank and two cars, on MUCH less than 100 k per year. Maybe your expectations are a little high? Good on you for living the good life but many Sydney people live on less than that. But, I think you areprobably right about getting on in life ... not many Australians seem to get far on the world stage, after all. And all those egocentric Sydney-siders! I can see why you'd want to relocate to the US, the Americans are so much more humble, lol.

Hey who wants to take up a collection and get superhot out of here and back to where he belongs quicker, he obviously doesn't belong in this country.

By the way superhot hate to tell you but I live on the Northern Beaches Sydney and own (ie no mortgage or money owing at all) a two storey house on the beach with children, dog the whole works and our combined family income is less than $80,000.00. Oh and yes my house would cost millions to buy but guess what it is not for sale!

I don't have a problem with the USA and spent last month in NYC and will be spending Christmas/New Year there again I have terrific friends over there and really love the place. But seem as superhot intends to go to live I would have to advise returning to Australia. I think you have been fed a few stories things are quite good at the moment with job seekers having the world at their fingertips with almost no unemployment. Home costs are starting to even out and you can live on a moderate income in most parts of Sydney. If you own a home in the USA unless you are in a really low economic area you would be able to own your own here. If you are renting then it really doesn't matter how much you earn or where you live because you are not going to better off in either country and will just spend what you earn.

Austrlia is good for a holiday but not to live, stay in usa much better

I think you should come to australia. It is easy to find the right school for your child and health care is so much cheaper here so at least if anyone gets sick you wont be hit with huge doctors bills. It is certainly a safer environment in Australia than in america. But why limit yourself to living in Sydney other cities of Australia offer much cheaper and affordable places to live why not try melbourne or brisbane?

USA is a good place a ustraila you have to have certain training or jobs to go Austrila and a toleralace for certain things

I've been schooled in Australia (Sydney) and the USA, and my undergrad is in Education. I'm currently living in the USA due to my husband's work committments. I can honestly say, handsdown, Australia is the place to be. You have a government that is prepared to come to bat, and look after its citizens, through the exceptional health care, education, and other welfare benefits. Most importantly I've seen a noticeable difference in the quality of education between the two countries. Unless you can affford a private school, and a big university here in the USA (eg Ivy League or are fortunate to have good state college system- California for instance), you are far better off in the land of Oz.

Mr G
I lived in both and are back in Australia. There are a few positives of living in the US which you have mentioned, but the most difficult thing will be the first 12 month adjustment. Why don't you see if you can get a job here first to see how in demend your skills are and then decide. The biggest difference between the two countries is the mentality of the average person. If you can't see the difference then it's not worth moving.

Why don't you just put your child in private school, home school or at worst find a public school district to transfer your child to.

Overall, Australia is a better place to live period.

Australia is a great place 2 live i wouldn't live anywhere else but do what is right for you and ur family

American schools are certainly much better than Australian schools. Public high schools in Australia are a mess... no air-con, dirty restrooms, lack of funding & resources... and alot of them teach out of trailers.... Private high schools are not that much better either... with staff areas being luxuriously furnished and having air-con while classrooms are sub-standard.

Universities are also much better in the USA... most of the worlds top 10 Universities are located in the USA while not one is located in Australia.....

You also have to take into consideration the cost of living in Australia..... Australia (especially Sydney) is very expensive compared to the USA..... I lived in Southern-California (only just returning to Sydney) and I must say that Southern California is MUCH cheaper than Sydney... even though it has the reputation of being one of the most expensive areas in the USA...

Zero tollerance is a good thing.... it has brought down crime rates in New York.... (which is now a safer city than Sydney)..... With all the crime in Sydney... such a thing needs to be implemented here.... Also if zero-tollerance was introduced in Australian schools... it would bring bullying down greatly.... bullying is a major problem in Australian schools and it usually is ignored by schools....

Australia is a good country because it is well-developed. However, overall I do believe that the USA offers one better opportunities in life, more variety and a better future.

As an example.... In the US a $100k income will let you and your family live very well off.... whereas in Sydney the equivilant amount is what is needed to just get you all by.....

Lastly, what Sky said about anti-Americanism in Australia is true... perhaps not for the whole of Australia but certainly for Sydney..... I believe its just jealousy.... many know that Americans have it well off... and Sydneysiders are very egocentric.... they believe they are the elite and that nobody or nothing is better than them......

Living a life
Australia..... hands down.
