Maybe a stupid question, but what exactly is there in Western Australia?

...Is it just one big massive desert? What exactly makes up the entire 3/4 of Australia that no one practically lives in?

Western Australia takes up one third of the Australian continent. About 2 million people live in the state, with about 1.5 million of those living in the capital city - Perth. Not all Western Australia is desert. The Southwest corner has giant Karri trees forests that are the second tallest trees in the world. It is also the home of Jarrah tree plantations and forests which are amongst the hardest and most prized natural woods nature has to offer. That part of the state is known for its Wines, Dairy farms and orchards. Midwest of the state is home to grain and sheep farms. This works in a ring from about Geraldton around to Meekatharra around to Merridin and Esperance. You will find yellow fields and grain silos and bleating sheep in the states breadbasket for miles on end. The wild Kimberley region that makes up the extreme top end of the state is a tropical paradise remote and fair and difficult to traverse. It is home to cattle stations and diamond mines. Through the state in the more unpopulated areas are mines for iron ore, zinc, copper, manganese and gold and many other minerals used the world over. Western Australia inputs more than a third of Australias total export income. If it wasn't for the mining and natural gas rigs in the remote north of the state Australia would have been in recession many years ago. Instead people are flown in and out to work each week from places as far away as Perth, Sydney, Brisbane even New Zealand.

While the remainder is mainly desert, it also home to some of the oldest and most spectacular landscapes on Earth. In the Pilbara region Karijini natonal park has several gorges, each entirely unique from the others. The Burrup peninsula on the Dampier archipelago is home to more than 10,000 aboriginal rock art paintings in the open where anyone can see them. Shark Bay is a world heritage listed area where wild dolphins put aside their fears and come to shore to nuzzle humans. Rottnest Island, 12km off the coast of Perth, is home miniature wallabies called Quokkas. They are practically tame and its the only place in the world you can visit them. They look a lot like large rodents (hence the name on the island) and are the cutest animals I have ever seen. In the Kimberleys in the Purnulu national park are the extremely fragile and beautiful Bungle Bungles. A large rock formation that looks remarkably like a town of beehives. Western Australia also has some the best beaches in the nation. They roll on for miles without end. The Beaches near Margaret River in the Southwest are part of the world professional surfing competiton circuit. One of the remote Pilbara beaches is eighty miles long.

It is the isolation and vast untouched wilderness that seduces many to visit the outback areas. The inhabited parts of the state while isolated from much of the world have all the amenities of any other Western country. This is place is no backwater and is one of the fastest growing economies in the country. The price of housing in Perth and the Southwest is on a par with the largest cities on Australia's east coast. Even in the remote north where the mining boom is at its peak, homes in the middle of nowhere are offered for million dollar price tags. Western Australia is a huge wild, beautiful place with many hidden wonders should you dare to seek them out.

Gee thats funny ive lived in W. A most of my life except when i travel
the world or other states
there are some very intelligent people here, we have the best beaches in Australia, the sand is white and fine, compared to yellow and course in other states. Wehave a first class casino, hundreds of hotels and lots of shopping centres. Where i live in Mandurah we have won an Australia wide award for the best new marina built about 2 years ago, there are movies, fashion, horse racing, the list goes on, yes if you believe it we even ride kangeroos down the main street

Watch the movie Australia most of it was filmed here and then goggle up Broome,El Questro and Exmouth you will soon see what we have to offer.
One thing you are right about is what we don't have and that is decent roads, hospitals and schools which sucks when you think how much money West Australia has contributed to the nations enconomy.

fruitsalad
Yes, the vast bulk of WA (and in fact Australia) is desert. Some stunningly beautiful places on the coast though.

Like the person above me said, we have WHITE sand =D

There's some beautiful places over here like Margaret River, Mandurah and Bussleton in the south west and other places like Coral Bay further north.

Head a little further inland in QLD or any other state for that matter and you'll find desert *rolls eyes*

Western Australia has a lot to offer scenery vise. There is Broom for example that is really nice. Also there are areas of Wesern Australia such as the Kimberly region which is absolutely gorgeous.

I WONT REPEAT THE ANSWERS OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE BUT WESTERN AUSTRALIA IS MAINLY DESERT - THE SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THIS LAND ARE RAINFOREST BUT THIS IN ONE OF THE HOTTEST PLACE IN AUSTRALIA
YOU CAN ALSO FIND THERE BEAUTIFUL WHITE BEACHES AND AMAZING LANDSCAPES AND VIEWS

THERE ARE PLENTY SMALL TOWNS - MABY BECAUSE I`VE READ THAT IN SOME PLACES THERE ARE LACK OF WATER
BUT IT DOESNE MEAN THAT THERES JUST DESERT

AS YOU SEE MOST OF BIGGEST CITIES AND LIFE CAME ON EAST SIDE OF AUSTRALIA WHERES MORE WATERA AND STUFF LIKE THAT NEEDED FOR LIFE

YES THATS TRUTH THAT MOST OF THE PLACES IN AUSTRALIA NO ONE PRACTICALY LIVES IN BECAUSE AS I SAID BEFORE THERE ARE NO SOURCES THAT HUMAN NEED TO LIFE

Get your facts right, it makes up 1/4 of Australia, is the biggest state in the world and has the most isolated capital city in the world.
Don't bother going there, it's just a boring desolate place
