Me and girlfriend are travelling to aus for 4 1/2 months, do you think 8000gbp or 16500 aus dollars is enough?

You should be ok. Just mange your money well. I spent 2months in Europe and spent $20,000 in that time. Obviously the exchange rate was the biggest killer as was airfares between countries.

Hostels here are like anywhere and can be hit and miss, and food here is quite high whether eating out or in. Try looking for pubs that have cheap lunch or dinner specials during the week. For the times you don't wish to cook.

But all in all I think that you will be fine. You have your ticket back home ( I am presuming) so it is not as though you would be stuck here. Some cities will be more expensive than others. But in general public transport is relatively cheap. Below are some handy sites for backpackers and cheap hotel rates.

although you brits get thirsty, so make sure you buy your booze from bottle shops rather than bars!

depends how you travel, where you stay, how you eat, etc...

Australia is not cheap but if you're coming from Europe you are already used to it...

I would recommend spending some of that money on a very nice camcorder/camera, you will thank yourself years later

that will be more than enough. you have to climb sydney harbour bridge whilst you are here, i think its $600 for 2 people, and you will love it. Jus make sure when you arrive that you do not carry all that money with you, or leave it in your hotel room out in the open (can never be too careful) hope you have a great time, you will love Aus, its the best country in the world

You should be fine if you budget. Austalia is an expensive country to travel in....petrol costs are increasing as well as food costs. lots of ppl get some camping gear and drive up the East coast to cairns.

I traveled Europe for 2 1/2 months on AU$5,500. I did the same thing, hostelling most nights and eating in a lot too, but managed to get by. I think given the amount you have, you should be pretty comfortable with travelling as living is a lot cheaper over here, and as long as you sometimes are ok with going pretty budget in big tourist spots (like ayers rock) you'll be bound to save some cash. If you've got flights booked, you shouldn't be worried at all. Enjoy it all!
