melbourne has many attractions in the city and for day trips. melbourne has many parks and gardens, some grand architecture (during an early phase of melbourne's development in the late 19th century it was the second richest city in the world) and some interesting contemporary architecture such as federation square, and an abundance of activities.

melbourne has a thriving cafe, bar, restaurant and nightclub culture with different localities offering varied experiences and tastes. fitzroy street, the esplanade and acland street in st kilda, chapel street in prahran, brunswick street in fitzroy, victoria street richmond, lygon street carlton and sydney road in brunswick are the most popular.

you have a good chance of getting tickets to an afl semi final or preliminary final but not much chance of getting tickets to the grand final. you can watch the grand final in one of melbourne's many pubs or better yet, try to get an invitation to someone's home for a grand final day barbecue. i hope you enjoy drinking beer.

don't forget to take a ride on a tram. the city circle around the cbd is good for sightseeing and the tram from st kilda to either coburg or preston (sorry i've forgotten which one) has recently been voted as one of the top ten tram rides in the world (the 2nd best if memory serves correctly).

staying on the railed transport theme but moving away from the city centre, why not take a ride on puffing billy through the dandenong ranges. this scenic recreational/tourist steam train ride through the forested foothills of the mountains to the east of the city can be relatively easily accessed via a regular train from the city to belgrave.

the great ocean road along the west coast of victoria after passing through the city of geelong is an enjoyable and scenic drive that takes you through many smaller towns with spectacular surf beaches and coastline including the 12 apostles (only about 8 remain, unfortunately, and 'london bridge' also fell down). dedicate a whole day for this trip, or make it two and spend a night at port fairy. the inland journey back to melbourne through the victorian countryside is well worth considering.

along the east coast of victoria you will find more spectacular beaches. a day trip, or possibly another two dayer, could take you to wilsons promontry, and squeaky beach, so named because the sand is so fine that it squeaks beneath your feet as you walk over it. also along the east coast a short 2 hour drive from melbourne is phillip island, where you can witness the penguin parade nightly around dusk, as well as enjoy other sight seeing.

and if you enjoy wildlife, apart from melbourne zoo located near the cbd in royal park, easily accessible by train or tram, take a trip to healesville sanctuary. about an hour and a half east of melbourne, healesville sanctuary offers the opportunity to meet some of australia's iconic wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. and don't forget to keep an eye out for some of the colourful and interesting bird life.

oh, and don't forget to take a peek at some of melbourne's world reknowned street art. hosier lane, behind the grand old forum theatre across the road from federation square is one of the highlights when you're in the area.

hmmm, and if you have any time left up your sleeve and are wondering what to do, take a trip to soveriegn hill near ballarat and get a glimpse of life on the goldfields whose produce helped shape the city of melbourne in its infancy.

attractions: our aquarium is pretty cool - go to the eureka tower and do "the edge" experience, queen vic market is fun, the zoo ( the elephant walk won some sort of award, i've not seen it yet but they say its pretty cool)

food: there is food everywhere you look in melb. try lygon st, chinatown, sydney rd, brunswick st... walk down any one of these and follow your nose - you are garanteed to find something impressive.

AFL: in finals season tix are scarce but harldy necessary. head out to any public bar with a big screen to get an AFL education and feel the vibe...

i suggest that you get lost in the laneways - thats where all the adventures are. also - read the age epicure section online... lots of reviews!

Melbourne CBD - State Library, NGV, Federation Square, Immigration Museum, Melbourne Aquarium, Old Melbourne Gaol, Queen Victoria Market, Botanical Gardens, Walk through the Lanes and Arcades, St Patricks Gothic Cathedral,
Southbank - Crown Casino - huge complex cinemas,bars,food halls, restaurants. At night watch the gas flames from just outside the casino.
Docklands - Telstra Dome and restaurants
Sporting places - tour the MCG,Telstra Dome and the Rod Laver Arena
At night visit the hundreds of hidden bars, go to the cinema or the theatre.
St Kilda - Beach
Shopping - lots of shops, dfo outlets and factory outlets
Tours - The Great Ocean Road, Sovereign Hill, Philip Island to see the penguins, Puffing Billy
There is so much more to see and do. Suggest that when you arrive that you go to the Melbourne Visitor Centre in Federation Square where you can pick up leaflets on all of the above and discount vouchers. Ask for the leaflets 1-7 which are walks around the city including the arcades and lanes
We have many restaurants here at all prices. We have Jamie Olivers 15, Rockpool, Nobu, Ceccionis, The Italian, The waterfront, No 8 just to name a few.

The Show is on from 18-28th September and is worth a visit.

Definitely try to get to the footy at the MCG - there is NOTHING as exciting as the MCG at finals time. Ticket sales haven't opened yet AFAIK, but you need to be really quick once they do.

Explore the Melbourne CBD particularly the lanes and arcades in the blocks bordered by Flinders, Elizabeth, Swanston and Bourke Streets. Degraves St is my favourite, but all of the others are great too.

Go to Queen Victoria Markets

Go to the Zoo

The Museum is excellent too

but there are dozens of others all over the place. Don't miss going to Lygon Street and Chinatown

Southbank, which is on the other side of the Yarra River has heaps of cool restuarants, and good shops. It is a really nice environment because of the riverside view and all the sculptures and everything. very nice :)

for shopping, degreaves st and all the arcades.

Gee, the one answer from the person who wears silly Bavarian costumes working at a place in the Dandenongs where they serve all the GermanBavarian (gee, that's redundant isn't it since Bavaria IS Germany...just a part of it!) food must have waited on me a couple of times! Actually, I do remember the food, do NOT remember any of the lederhosen being worn by anyone. Darn it, now I'm gonna have to go back!
Otherwise I guess you can ride the Puffin' Billy as long as you're in the Dandenong's. It's very pretty there and why not go to a vineyard, too? Too bad I even quit drinking so I can't even enjoy the very delicious & fine Australian wines. (I used to enjoy them....VERY MUCH, too....and boy, they really are very good! Try the 1987 Brown Brothers Pinot Noir)
If I contact my friend in time I'll ask him to get tickets for you to go to the finals (he used to play MANY years ago!) but gee, don't know how to get them to you so maybe I'll have to use them myself or something!!
Otherwise Melbourne truly is FANTASTIC for so many things! Culturally, I think it's better than Sydney....by far...but again, that's just my opinion I could be wrong!

You can always do what my son used to LOVE doing when he was young, and that was ride the trams rolleys all day, every day! There you go, your trip is complete!!

Actually and seriously, he DID love to do that! But aside from that, you shouldn't have any trouble finding all types of things to do. Go to the South Yarra part of Melbourne for restaurants, shopping, and many other things, plus the Yarra River is the only place in the world where the Duck Billed Platypus lives. FYI.

okay :) my advice have one night at crown theres so much to do there (bowling, laser wars, clubs, bars, food, pokies, entertainment, movies)

best food i think its called little flinders street but if u go tp flinders station and walk towards to aquarium but dont cross the yarra its the first little street on your right. theres a ton of great lil places there too eat.
