Advance Australia Fair - our national anthem composed by Peter Dodds McCormick, a scot!

It was proclaimed Australia's National Anthem by the Governor - General on 19th April 1984

Lyrics:

"Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair."

Theres a couple more stanzas that can be found in the links below.

The choice was made "between "Advance Australia Fair", "Waltzing Matilda" and "God Save the Queen" and Song of Australia.

"A national poll was conducted to ascertain the public choice of a national song. This time over seven million people were issued with ballot papers. The results were: ‘Advance Australia Fair' 43.2 per cent, ‘Waltzing Matilda' 28.3 per cent, ‘God Save the Queen' 18.7 per cent and ‘Song of Australia' 9.6 per cent

I always associate "Waltzing Matilda" with Australia, but then again, I'm not Australian. The song is so old I have no clue as to who wrote it or how many people have recorded it.

Land Down Under
Australiana (by Austen Tayshus, spoken word - very aussie)
Tenterfield Sadler

And, not for it's Aussie lyrics but because it is an 80's Aussie anthem for lovers "Throw Your Arms Around Me" from Hunters and Collectors"

For me, it's a toss up between 'I still call Australia home' by Peter Allen and 'Walk a country mile' by Slim Dusty.

Coming home from overseas after a long time away last year, I heard those two songs on the plane's 'radio', one after another, and actually burst out crying from home sickness.

To me, they'll always say 'home', and that's what Australia is to me.

Cheers :-)

steve
theres a few
down under by men at work
this is australia by ganggajang
of course waltzing matilda

but my favourite is i am australian by the seekers, i have so many memories of singing this by the camp fire in the bush at night on school camp

edit: annje obviously isnt from australia and has got things from the net, it was a referendum that decided our ultimate national anthem, and it was up against waltzing matilda, god save the queen and another song....

I'm not really clear exactly what the question is looking for, but here are some songs that always make me think of Australia:

Steve's suggestion of "This is Australia" by ganggajang is a great one, but the song is called "Sounds of Then".

Another suggestion I would make is "Wide Open Road" by the Triffids.

Widely recognised outside Australia, but dated would be Rold Harris - "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" and "Sunarise"

Oh and just about anything by Paul Kelly will be distinctively Australian, though much more subtly than I Still Call Australia Home or Tie Me Kangaroo Down

~love~
waltzing matilda..???.....
