Moving from the U.S to Australia?

I am thinking about moving to Australia, i am an american citizen but my mom is not, would it be tough for her to emigrate? I love melbourne would it be too expensive to live there at first? If so, which other areas would you prefer?
Also, how is the situation there now as far as jobs are concerned? I got a two year degree from a college and im still going for my bachelor.
Finally how different is it living in Australia compared to the U.S, i lived in europe for 10 years and loved it are those two comparable?

Hey there, I live in Melbourne and it is a beautiful city (Not so much right now, it's 43 degrees celcius - about 110 degrees F?)
As long as you are not too close to the city, it should be pretty affordable. Plus the University of Melbourne is in the top 210 universities in the world! :D
Compared to Europe Australia is a lot more relaxed and laid back, but not in a bad way. I like to think we are quite similar to America, just smaller (population wise). What country is your Mom/Mum from ? As long as she has no criminal history she should be fine to come here. Good luck :D

I don't know, but i live in Melbourne and it's awesome!

I have not lived there but knew people from europe that moved there for a year. they said they absolutely loved it and it is similar to america rather than europe. also, i have heard that recently they are cracking down on illegal immigrants working so before you go do your research.

congratulations on your decision to move to australia, it's a great country, and you'll love living here, we are very laid back, friendly, and we like to look out for eachother. our government supports us if we lose our job (we can go on the doll for as long as we want) and there are plenty of support over here. we have lots of natural beauty from rainforests, to white sandy beaches and the great barrier reef, high mountains with snow on top to great barren deserts and of course, the bush (its everywhere!).

first off, look into getting a visa, research into your options, it's easier if you are skilled in a trade or profession that australia is lacking. it's all here at http://www.immi.gov.au/

you can also find out if you mother can move here too at that site (have a talk with her about the move as well)

i suggest you get you bachelor first, you'll have more of a chance of getting the job you want, due to the finacial crisis (don't let the finacial crisis discourage you)

take a trip to melbourne first, get to know the area (and the inner and outer suburbs), familiarize yourself with the city, main roads and freeways, public transport systems, ask around, there will be plenty of people who would want to help :) also get to know victoria, and the area's outside of melbourne. it'll be easier if you know the place when you move, and you know what people are talking about ie. "went down for the weekend to geelong". btw, geelong is the second biggest city in victoria. also have a general knowledge of australia, that'll help to. this will all make sure you don't feel lost.

on your trip research into job oppurtunitys, look at accomadation (according to your finacial situation) you can move into a share house, rent or buy.

when you decide what sort of accomadation you will get, i suggest you look into the eastern outer suburbs (40 - 50km away from the CBD) the further away you are, the cheaper it is. and also because of the crisis, house prices and intrest rates are dropping dramatically (unlike what beyong bleach said, sorry but i no my own country thanks!). if you like paticular suburbs, make sure it's close to a train line (bus lines), that means you can get to the city and lots of other places, wen you move, but before you get a car.

i also suggest wen you are on your trip, to start getting to know people, and start building up a social network, so you start to make friends over here, and your not completly alone when you move here

back home, after you have received bachelor, organize your visa, and start researching into companys in america that let you hire containers, so you can actually get you stuff over her, also tie up any loose ends.

but with the container, you won't get your stuff for about 1 - 3 months, and you'll need to give them an address before you leave.

you will also need a fair amount of spare money (this is not for all the other expenses, it's for after the move, to buy basic things you need before you container arrives, emergancys etc) also get to know the metric system, it'll help lots!

if i was you, i wouldn't move anywhere else but melbourne in australia. sydney and melbourne are the main business cities, so there are more jobs. but sydney is badly laid out, and melbourne is also cheaper, and is designed very well. it was named the most livable city in the world a couple of years back and melbourne has good weather (we get the cold days, the hot days and the imbetween, though the hot weather gets a little extreme).

i hope this helps and everything goes well
good luck!

p.s if you end up wanting to become an australian citzen, you'll have to know this country and its past very well. plus you'll have to know the australian anthem.

Whether you can migrate has nothing to do with what country you are from, it has to do with what skills you have. You need a qualification and experience in a skill Australia needs, you can find info and a list of skills at www.immi.gov.au.

Unemployment is rising here, but it isn't anywhere near as bad as in the US. There are still jobs available if you have the right skills. Good luck.

Your first concern will be getting a visa to live in Australia...not an easy thing to do. you need to research visas and immigration before making any other plans. Even if you qualify, it can easiy take at least 3 years.

Melbourne is fairly expensive but not as bad as Sydney, you could start of in a smaller city, such as Ballarat or Bendigo which are only a couple of hours drive from Melb. The job situation is a bit dim everywhere due the financial crisis, unemployment and government handouts are predicted to reach their highest in 2010/11. Your best bet would be to locate a job before you pack up and move, else I would recommend waiting for the crisis to blow over and gain your degree in the meantime, or just come over for a holiday to check it all out. Australia is much more relaxed and carefree than America, but we have adopted alot of language/ food etc. from America.

well, i'd wait till i got the bachelor....education is very important!

for your mom, i would ask her how she feels about it.

it might be expensive at first, and the monetary system i think is different there.

it gets very hot in australia. You say celcius as oppose to farenheit, you use the metric system.
