Murder charge for these arsonists, who agrees!?

Hello everyone,
First I just wanted to say that my heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones in these terrible bushfires and my family will pray for them, and for the fires to stop quickly.
When I first read that some of the fires were started by arsonists, the first quote I read online in response to this in the Sydney Morning Herald, was that the book was going to be thrown at whoever was found responsible. And I was thinking, that is not enough, they should be charged with mass murder, because that is exactly what they have done! So I am exceptionally glad that I am now hearing on the news that they are talking about possibly charging the arsonists with murder.
Of course nothing will bring these poor people back, or help these families with their suffering, but I am tired of these arsonists just being thrown with vandalism and endangerment of life charges. They committed murder, mass murder, and they should go to jail for the rest of their natural lives.
Lets all pray for rain.

For those of you who don't know 131 people have died (as of this moment) and I'm not sure on the other stats but I've heard 700 homes destroyed and 35 000 hectares of land burnout? If someone could correct me or verify I'd appreciate it.

I Live In Paradise
a public horse flogging would be ideal

but

then we would get all the do gooders coming in like the civil libertarians saying these poor people had such a hard life they came from a dysfunctional family
single parent
father unknown
where abouts unknown

some high priced lawyer defends the low life and

time the civil libertarians finished talking on there behalf they would be lucky to get a good behaviour bond

these people are terrorist and killers nothing less

→ Mitch â†
I absolutley agree.
The destruction they cause is similar to that of a terror attack, whole towns destroyed, familys killed.
They need to be dealt with severly,
and it's actually over 330,000 Ha burnt....thats a helluva lotta land.

Well said!! well minus the praying part.. but what ever you believe in and takes your fancy. But the rest is dead on correct (please excuse the word choice). My heart does go out to them. I certainly believe that the arsonists should be gaoled for life no parole. These people as good as murdered people. To me there is no excuse.. I don't care. People have lost their lives, people have lost family and friends, people have lost homes, cars, all their worldly possessions. Many are now homeless. There can be no excuse or reason for this disaster, for the atrocity, whole towns have been wiped out. Houses gone, businesses gone people's way of life, their work, their businesses. This should not go unpunished. To be honest even life in gaol without parole is not good enough... but we don't have anything else to offer.

AGREE......Murder - Life.

So many people have suffered, and will continue to suffer for a long time because of these arsonists actions.
The people responsible for lighting these fires should go to prison for the rest of their lives, they do not deserve to be allowed to be free. I don't care what their sad stories are, put simply, their actions lead to 173 (so far) people's deaths.
All Australians are angry, and these people, once caught, will have an entire nation against them.
I'm not religious, so I don't believe in the power of prayer, but I have donated $50 (not much, I know, but, it's all I had), and my 8 year old daughter, has emptied her piggy bank, and asked me to donate her $10.25 to help.
We can't turn back time and stop this from happening, but Australians are very caring, and will always do their best to help those who need it.
Best Wishes, and Good Luck to those caught up in this horrible time.

They definitely need to be locked up for life, as these guys do it for the thrill of it, you are wrong Sabine these guys are not developers they are sick and evil people. In Western Australia at the moment Kings Park , has been set alight 4 times this month, they had a picture of a guy on the news last night who they think is responsible he is on a push bike. Lucky the water bombers managed on Sunday to put it out yet again as some parts are in accessible to fire fighters
he has destroyed hectares of forrest and flowers.
My heart goes out to the people in Victoria there are 130 dead and more but they cannot access some parts as yet to see how many more. there are 100 people in hospital and 5000 people now with out homes. West Australia government today is giving one million dollars to help out, plus the announced on t v tonight that there will be a telethon on Thursday compered by Eddie Mc Guire and the Sally army and some banks are taking donations to help

The whole planet feels the same about that tragedy in your country.....
Those people whose sick minds hosted such thoughts, are worse than mass killers.... they destroy Nature.....as if they could create it. They kill people....as if they could give their life back. They spread misery and pain to all of us. Believe me, I live in Europe and we all empathize with that catastrophe..... I agree...... Murder charge, death penalty for those who destroy what no one can restore, for those who destroy our future on this Earth, for those who kill the planet, who spread pain.

One of the few laws i'm 100% in agreement with here in the US:

If anyone dies during the commission of a felony, all those involved in the felony are charged with murder.

So, on that point, yes, I would agree that murder would be an appropriate charge in the case.

Elizabeth
I agree, you've pretty much said it all.
These people are not mad they are just plain bad.
They do what they do because they can and they know exactly what they are doing.

aflumpire
No less than a life sentence.

I am sure that they did not go out there to kill that many people, if anyone at all - but they should pay for killing that many people.

Its sickening isn't it??

Mel - thats one of the best answers you have ever put on here!

Shez
A murder charge is definitely warranted for those who deliberately light fires that result in such a tragic loss of lives. Australia is a country that always has problems with fires in summer. The saddest part is the sickness that the fire starters have, these people that think its fun to cause damage by igniting their own fires should be made to contribute to the community for the rest of their lives by serving our CFS. & SES.

Jess
I think a lot of people are confusing being charged with murder with giving arsonists the death penalty (which isn't used in Australia anymore anyway).
Like you, I agree with charging the arsonists with murder.
It is then up to the criminal justice system to decide whether they are mentally fit to stand trial.

Stuff the judicial system, throw them to the public to be dealt with. They will wish they were never born by the time we would finish with them.

AGREE!!!!
It's a mass murder, they are sick people!
I think i heard Kevin Rudd on the news tonight say that they should rot in jail!
Yes they should rot in jail alright, for killing so many people!
I can't beleive someone would light a fire, it gets me so angry!

Sabine T
I agree, but to do this we are going to have to put to the judge your huge CEO's of major real estate development companies who have started the fires in the first place in order to make gains.

Just added in: I actually got the idea from what happened in Greece Muddle, because I remember when you guys had the fires it was also proven it was done by developers. I would actually put money on it that developers are also responsible for bushfires here in Australia too. They will stop at nothing, and its really sad that so many Australian's are blind to it

You used the term "pray" which implies that you are in some way religious and believe in God. Otherwise you just...are one of those people who say pray and mean nothing...

So I have to say that you need to really reevaluate your anger and grief. I wonder what led the arsonists to do what they did, what missed warning signs...what missed love. I'm not justifying what they did, it was very wrong. However an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.

Hun, you can give me all the thumbs down you like, but praying isn't going to do much. Something more practical like donating food and clothes for people who have lost their homes would be more effective.

The people who lit the fires obviously have something wrong in their head. If somebody in your family had a mental illness and lit a fire that they obviously didn't mean to kill anyone (not saying the arsonists did or didn't) would you want them to get the death sentence? No.

We need the focus more on rehabilitating these people rather than just offing them for a quick fix. Also need to focus more on mental health awareness to PREVENT things like this happening.
