What are typical habits for Australian people?
I'm very curious in what way Australian people are different from Dutch people (except for the language)....

My Australian classmate just said "I've lived in Australia before and the people there are pretty ignorant." ?

What the hell? Lols

All I know about him is that he's 17, he comes from Perth and he moved to Indonesia a few years ago.

there are definitely some ignorant people in Australia, like any country we get our rednecks!

I'm from Perth myself, and I would have to say compared to many other cities in Aus and also in other Western countries, there are so many ppl there who have never travelled - many even in their 20s-30s and older who have never stepped foot on a plane!

Perth is the most isolated state/territory capital city in the world. Its very expensive to travel anywhere. so a lot of people, and dare i say a higher proportion of these come from rural areas again due to travel costs, have really not had any experience outside of perth. This could definitely be perceived as ignorant.

Plus life in Perth can be pretty blissful and peaceful, its so easy just to ignore all the disasters going on everywhere else, its kinda normal to think 'it will never happen in perth...' so people just tune out.

As with any gross generalisation, it fits some people and doesn't fit others.

Are ALL perth ppl ignorant? HELL NO! but there are some out there.

As an Australian all I'll say is, that on the whole we treat people as they treat us.
Enough said.

Firstly he is 17. That is not an age when people know much. He was associating mainly with children (I use the word advisedly, that is, I really mean it) his own age when he lived in Australia "a few years ago" and they would not have known much either, being mainly children. What they did know was pretty much what he knew anyway.

As for the real adults in his life, he might be surprised to find out what his parents know. As for other adults, he would not have a clue what they know. So it is pretty much him displaying his own ignorance rather than having an informed opinion about what Australians know.

for starters, if your friend is australian...he has lived in australia before...so no need to clarify that part!

anywho, it depends where you go, live, and meet!

every country has ignorant people and every country has lovely helpful people...

synopsis
it's a cultural thing. most australians worry more about coming across as pretentious than coming across as uncultured. they tend to play down how clever they are, so they get a reputation for being thick.

in france the opposite is true: people tend to play up how clever they are. so the french have a reputation for being snobby and cold.

in fact as you get to know most australians you discover that they are much cleverer and discerning than you at first thought. as you get to know french people you find that they are much friendlier (and sloppier) than they present themselves as being.

people don't vary _that_ much country to country - but how people see themselves can.

I'm an Singaporean student studying in melbourne for 5 yrs...one of the things i'm pretty sure is that they are definately not acting ignorant to seem tough...most australians i've met (even those in melbourne uni) have a great sense of self-importance, with no idea of whats happening in the rest of the world, and thus think that they are 'the best'..thats ignorance no?... they should embrace globalisation, instead of shunning it. thats what leads to the huge amt of racism in the country. it seems like australia is soon becoming the next america (in terms of ignorance of the people). not that they r not already kissing america's asses right now...
