Depends on what sort of country you are coming from and what sort of lifestyle you are after.
Sydney and Melbourne are the largest cities, but unless you are very wealthy you will not be able to live close to the city. Not so good if you want the best for your family, as schooling is expensive and travelling times are longer. Many people love these cities, though.
Adelaide is quieter, but is in the middle of a crippling drought. It is good for families, has excellent beaches, is surrounded by lovely hills, food and housing is more affordable. Schooling is cheaper. Perth is like Adelaide (1.5 million people), is growing and good for mining industry, building sector, families. It is a growing city in a growing state (Western Australia).
Brisbane and the Gold Coast are growing, and tropical, are humid in summer, but weather is generally warmer. It is more tourist-oriented than the other states, being tropical in nature. Good for retirees.
Tasmania is colder, but very pleasant, down-to-Earth type of state, and its capital, Hobart, is small and quaint, housing is affordable, crime is low, it is not very cosmopolitan, but this aspect is changing, I imagine. It is not as industrialised, factory-wise, as the other cities. It is good for families, but for high-paying executive jobs, the work is on the mainland in Melbourne and Sydney.

Families - Adelaide.
Never been to Western Australia, but I hear Perth is quite nice.
Melbourne and Sydney are BIG, although they do have some advantages. Lived in Sydney for 2 years with young children. Don't think I would have liked to settle down there permanently.

It would depend on what you are looking for - Australia is all about lifestyle. I live in Sydney and its hectic and busy but I would not live anywhere else - I have access to the best beaches in the world, a great job and live in a great neighbourhood.
If you family is looking to migrate and they need to work - then that would help make your decisions also, our current unemployment rate is just on 4% which means getting a job should not be too hard especially if you speak english.

I don't really agree with the 3rd person's point about Sydney's high cost equalling good living. I've lived in the Castle Hill area for my whole life, and have only ever needed to go to the city for sports matches or sightseeing. And then my local high school is one of the top public schools in the whole state (Cherrybrook Technology High).

You can live anywhere in Sydney and not have to deal with the inner city lifestyle that a lot of people like. But, if you do want that then go ahead, it'd be great.

I live in Western Australia i like it for the spaciousess , also easy to find your way around, the weather here is great not
steamy like Queensland, or ffreezing in winter like Melbourne
also schools have lots of playing areas for children and parks unlike Sydney have to travel an hour out of city to find a park
and buildings are all crammed up on top of one another
Prices are reasonable for homes and rent, not sure about jobs depends on what you want, also we have great beaches here sand is very fine and white unlike other states where its yellow like what we use to build with and the surfing is great if you like that, you can live near the beach 15 minutes from the city centre on the freeway

Well i live in QLD (brissy now) and i used to live in Adelaide.

Coming from the UK and emigrating here with my family, i would have to say that South Australia is the best place to move to with a family

Sydney and Melbourne are a bit more busy and less laid back and would probably suit a couple without children better.

And i have never been to Western Australia but i hear there that is where a lot of people are moving to these days, (due to the mining industry).

well really out of the top 10 most liveable cities in the world 4 aus cities are in it.
so basically where ever u go ull find it wonderful there.
i wuld say either melbourne or adelaide for great food and travelling interstate but if you love the sun then brisbane
if you want a hectic life then go for sydney

It would be either Queensland or South Australia. Coz in South Australia it is the state of Festivals and in Queensland it is the Sunshine state.

Brizzy all the way baby!! Im a pilot for Virgin so ive been to all the major states. Ide say either Brisbane or Adelaide for Family buddy. NOT SYDNEY. Good luck
