Well, it takes about 12-16 hours, depending on your average speed and how many rest stops you take.

Travel Battleship, Chess, Checkers, Chinese Checkers, and the like are good. You can pick these up cheap at The Reject Shop or The $2 Shop. More complicated games like "travel" Monopoly or Scrabble are really hopeless; Too many bits to keep hold of.

I can't think of many card games off the top of my head that you can play without a table, but there might be quite a few if you have a bit of a search. There's Go Fish and Old Maid for starters.

Advise everyone to bring a book, and a personal music player if they have one, for when they feel like being less active. On my trip we chartered our own bus and everyone made a compilation tape/CD/minidisc to pipe through the speakers, and everyone got their compilation played once, which was kind of interesting. Even if you can't run your music through the speakers, people can still trade compilations.

Big puzzle/crossword books can be good, especially if you cut/tear pages out and hand them around. Some puzzle books I've seen even have perforated pages for exactly this reason. Make sure you have plenty of pens or pencils; Pencils are usually better, because if they get jammed or broken you can just sharpen them (or advance the lead if it's a mechanical pencil), and you can erase mistakes, which is a big plus for doing puzzles and crosswords.

I hope you enjoy your trip!

The good old license plate game. Look at the letters on passing cars and either choose to make up a name or a sentence. eg. EHS - Ellen Harriett Smith or every hour sucks. etc etc. Have fun!!!!

Can be fun to have some balloons for amusement . Sausage types to make balloon figures. A few helium ones blown up could be amusing as they could be gently passed around . If you play games you could have sweets for good performance to get more involved. Pencil and paper idea good perhaps a few could make suggestions which you could pick on at various times so you get every one involved. Sing alongs can be good to get you breathing better. The bus company should be able to tell you how long it will take as it also depends on the stops they make. Offhand I would say about 8 hours at the most as buses cannot travel as fast as cars and they need stops for drinks and meals and it takes time for everyone to get in and out. Further with amusement you could ask if people could at stops change seats occasionally so that there is more contact between the group. Perhaps pass around a sketch pad for further amusement. Print out a series of jokes to be passed around this will make for a fun trip ! Knock knock jokes are good and fairly short. Background music may be of help take along some CD beware of bus movies not fun at all !

I look good in anger
you can play the number plate game always kept me occupied...you just make up nicknames for other drivers according to the letters on their plate. some times you have to be nasty and quick. car cricket, go fish, racing cards, there is heaps you can do..

Get everyone to choose a make of car (eg Mitsubishi, Holden, Ford) or a colour or car, and they have to keep count of the number of those vehicles they see. Might work.
Another option I can think of, although this may not work unless everyone is a bit intoxicated, is starting a full-bus sing-a-long.

One more thought, but it is a tad morbid, play count the road-kill.

Frosty
Well you could sing
40,000 green bottles hanging on the wall.

If you finish yell "one more time!"

That should keep you going.

I reckon Uno, travel battleship, a book to read and a puzzle book.

I live near Werribee. It took us 9 hours to drive there, so I guess a bus would be a couple of hours longer. Also, does the bus pick up from Werribee or do you have to go to the City for pick up?

Have a nice trip...

This may sound kidish, but believe me it passes the time! Go through the alphabet a-z finding the letters on all the billboards and buildings, but not the license plates, or anywhere in the car. Whoever gets all the letters first, "wins" It is very competitive game so to say.

I don't remember the other game, but when I think of it I will add it on

I went to adelaide for weekend, and it tooks us 6 hours to drive there from Melbourne, i guess a car is a little faster and we only stopped once. Games? read a book... talking

Games between 2 people sharing a seat : connect four and battleships (can buy cheap travel size games in discount/variety stores)

A good game for the whole bus to be involved in : chinese whispers. Where one person at the front of the bus starts by whispering a sentence into one persons ear. Then that person whispers it into the person sitting next to them etc etc. Until it gets back to the first person and they tell everyone what it started as and what it ended as. It is always so funny!

Have fun!!

Take a book on CD to listen to. Take your fav CDs and swap them with the mates, if everyone takes one or two there should be plenty to do.

I reckon if you leave at say close to bed time they will probably sleep most of the trip anyway.

Take a joke book or two, crosswords, local papers to read would be good. Spotting wildlife or trees or mountain ranges can be fun too. Yapping to the mates, other people can be interesting. Just be happy you don't have to drive there like I did. It took me about 8 or 10 hours to drive there but I had a sleep in Border town. Enjoy yourselves.
