Don't worry about coming for a year just pack your bags and apply to emigrate because once you have been here you won't want to go back.
There is so much to see and do it depends if you love the country or the city life and are you planning on covering the whole of Australia?or do you have a specific area in mind.If your arriving in August i would suggest starting at the top end of the country and working your way down the coast say from Cairnes down the coast to the gold coast and keep traveling till you get to Melbourne.
Good Luck.

Weather will be quite pleasant at that time of year. Start off in Western Oz if you wanna do a bit of travelling. Perth is a good place to start...then catch a train to Fremantle....rent a car and drive round SW Albany, Margaret River, Busselton etc. You'll be driving through quaint little towns eg Denmark, but they are few and far between! The drive from Albany to Perth is a good 5 hours (and involves overtaking loooooong road trains) whic i found quite un-nerving lol Catch a 5hr flight over to Sydney and be prepared t spend a little bit more, being the more livliest of coasts. I could go on but dont wish to bore you..check out Lonely Planet Australia guidebook as it is very informative. Good Luck and all the best...you will really enjoy it, and Aussies are so friendly (if you ignore the cricket banter!)(

depends whether you need to work or not immediately when arriving- most of australia's most beautiful spots are away from the cities so the more you tackle the furthest away from where you want to end up the more likley you are to have covered more of things to see. Arriving in Aug is still winter in the lower states if you can visit kakadu (northern territory) and the east coast from Cairns down to Brisbane including the Great Barrier reef and Fraiser Island before working your way down to sydney which has a large vibrant work oppotunities for those travelling through.

its going to be winter over there in august. but i would say start in perth, and work your way to the eastern states. but i know perth can get quite rainy during this month.

Sydney is the obvious frist choice- cheapest flights to Sydney, close weather patters to Ireland and lots of work to save up for your next city. (also not a big culture shock)

Then head to Melbourne, enjoy the edgy lifestyle it has to offer and make some more cash!

By then possibly do some friut picking in South Australia then make your way up to Ularu.

Finally relax anywhere on the west coast or on the east coast btw Brisbaine and Cains.

Thats what I did hope that heklps.

Sunshine Coast Queensland! Best!

you will need visas to be anle to stay a year and work
if your under 30 you can apply or a working holiday visa.........august is mid winter so perhaps start in the north

The far north of Australia (ie Broome, Darwin, Cairns, etc. have a wet/cylone season from Nov. to March. These areas are best visited April-Oct. Nov-March could be spent in the more southern states where it will be warm and dry.
This way you can follow the sun (and not the clouds).
