I disagree about YHA, their hostels arent as nice as some of the independent ones, and dont have facilites where you can sit back with other travellers and havea beer or 2.
I backpacked around the world for 6 months, and had the following.
A pair of jeans,
3 pair shorts
tshirts,
socks
runners
thongs/flipflops
jumper
towel
underwear
toiletries.
He will be able to buy things here, but remember your summer is our winter, so as long as he has long pants and some warm clothing he will be fine. Most hostels have washing facilites so he will be able to do laundry.
A girl I met whilst travelling had a suitcase and she was fine with it. IT because a little cumbersome after a while tho, especially when she was trying to wheel it over gravel.
I can help you further if you let me know where he is actually heading. |

no not true at all, im backpacking at the moment and have seen people in the rooms im in witha wide range of packs all shapes and sizes, its not a prob, back packs are a bit easier to carry but they wont not let someone in if they have a case!

Ps ignore the people mentioning the film hostel!! he´ll be fine |

I've never been backpacking or stayed in a hostel before but I googled real quick and found this :
"Basically you will need a very small amount of the same stuff you would normally travel with plus a couple of extra items. Then you will need something comfortable and practical to carry it all in. Pack Lightly! While hostelling you won't find baggage porters, suitcase racks or hanging closet space. You will likely be traveling on public transportation and walking from place to place. Because hostels are in unique locations they are often not the most convenient places to get to. Traveling light is fundamental if you are going to have an enjoyable time. Most first time hostellers don't believe this advice and almost always set out with too much stuff. Within the first couple of weeks they send most of it home. Hostellers don't bring a different item of clothing for each day of the week. Some clothes are often worn more than once before being washed in the local laundromat. In some cases the hostel may have clothes washing facilities. The easiest way to carry your stuff from place to place is with a backpack. This is the single most important piece of equipment for the long term hosteller. For this reason, when buying a backpack, don't skimp. Find a store that will patiently let you try on lots of different packs. They are all sized and shaped differently so make sure it's comfortable. Good backpack stores will have beanbags or other weights so you can try packs on with something inside. As already mentioned, you will probably want to bring a few items you might not bring when staying in hotels. The main ones are soap, a towel and a sleep-sheet." |

The issue isn't whether they allow cases or not, but rather do they have the facilities to store them? Typical hostels have shared rooms and they usually provide lockers to store any personal belongings. So cases or luggage bags might not be such a good idea unless you can fit them into a standard locker.
plus he should bring a nice sturdy lock too. Make sure its not too big though. |

I'm not sure about the cases/backpacks thing.
As to weather: this depends where he is going. We are in the middle of winter right now. A guide is below:
Sydney - day temp is about 16-20C. night temp is about 10-15C.
Brisbane - day temp is about 18-23C. night temp about 8-15C.
Melbourne - day temp is about 10-15. night temp about 2-10. |

Backpackers hostels vary hugely.
It's just a matter of storage really for the cases etc.
He needs to go on to some sites to see comments by others regarding experiences. |

He should join some hostel organisation. YHA is Youth Hostel Association. They can't turn him away then. It will give him extra discounts too. Once the cases don't take up too much room. He should research the hostels well and check them out before parting with his money. Some are filty and some are like places of prostitution. In Sydney, a good one is in Manly. It is called The Manly Beach Resort but it is a hostel. A bit more expensive than the others but worth it. In Brisbane I stayed in Durham Villa in Laura Street near Southbank Parklands. It was fine. I was there for 3 months. If he joins an association and gets a little book from them of hostels most of them should be ok. Still need to check them though. Melbourne area is cooler and more changeable weather than the rest of Australia and so he needs a jumper for there. It will be winter when he is there. A rain jacket is no harm either. Otherwise a general mix of clothes but more so light summery clothes and good shoes. No Valuables. They'll be robbed in hostels. I had two rings stolen. Insect repellent, sun block etc. |

No hostels that I know of restrict the type of luggage, but there would be a limited amount of space for storage, a medium-to-small sized suitcase would be fine, I suspect. |

June, July, August is our winter, warm clothes is my first thought. It's a different kind of cold here, the type that goes straight through you. |
