i would say byron bay as its the eastern most point in australia, but its not really big enough to be classed as a city, so maybe sydney

I would have to say Sydney, but not sure.

Iskandar
Well, using my common sense, I suppose it would be Sydney, because it is the city that is Australia's beacon to the outside world. It is the first place that most immigrants come to and tourists. I think? Not really sure.

That could get you about about six different answers.
It used to be Perth, that is where migrant ships used to call first from Europe.
Darwin is the closest to Asia, and that is where a lot of sea trade comes first.
Sydney is the first City most airlines land at first, and many cruise ships start from there, so I guess these days that could actually be the main entry point.
Melbourne has the biggest sea trade, and is only just behind Sydney in aircraft arrivals.

Sydney!

Thus it would seem that us Australians don't actually have any knowledge of one of our cities being called "Australia's font door", I've certainly never heard the expression before.

oldemystic
But then, if you're coming from Japan, it's Cairns.
