Could you please help by rating the following suburbs from (1-5) in terms of security, quality and accessibility, and comment if any, I have 7 and 9 yrs old kids:

COBURG
DONCASTER
DOVETON
DANDENONG
DEER PARK
HEIDELBERG
HOPPERS
CROSSING
HUNTINGDALE

Thanks heaps for your help in advance :)

to the last answer^ get over yourself. it's people like you that give melbourne a bad image.

dont worry mate. not everyone here is like that *****.

well coburg is a great place to live. it's close to the city. really busy though. lots of shops and factory outlets (some your spouse might be interested in). i'd say for a bloke with and 7 and 9 year old, coburg isn't the best place. there are trains trams that go directly to the city in the area though. not a very safest neighbourhood though.

doncaster is quite far from the city. nice malls and shopping centers around. not a bad place for your kids.

doveton. no idea where that is mate so not gona comment

dandenong. i'd say too far from the city and everything. kind of isolated even if you ask me haha. but it's a great place. i got mates who live there and they don't have issues with it.

deer park. pretty well established already. my uncle lives there. it's a pretty secure neighbourhood. abit old fashioned if you don't have an issue with that. old style houses and some elderly people living there. as a kid, i was always scared of the place though

heidelberg. eastern melbourne. abit far from the city too i guess you could say. but they have good facilities and such. don't know too much about it.

hoppers crossing. now i'd say this is the most suitable place for someone like you. great schools. it's already a pretty well established area and is still developing and growing. great facilities. good schools in the area. good people (i used to live there so i know)... and everything is there. good big shopping center (werribee plaza), doctors, hospital, cop shop. train stations. LOTS of bus routes that go past every primary and secondary school. safe neighbourhood. and is only 20 mins away from the city. and in peak hour is probably the freeway with the least congestion.

my advice would be hoppers crossing. dandenong is about 35 mins from the city and the freeway tehr has the worst traffic. hoppers on the other hand is only 20 mins and the freeway, like i said, is pretty much scotch free til you get to the west gate bridge.

i live in another suburb but go to school there. i sure as hell wish i still lived there. the only reason why we moved out is because it was abit too far from mums work.

well good luck mate.

hoppers crossing is not even halfway to geelong from the city. hoppers is only 25 mins from the CBD with the LEAST traffic. you guys obviously don't know melbourne. i live near hoppers and you guys are being a little exaggerative with its distance!

Coburg is a suburb that's quite Italian/ Greek in make up much of the housing was built in the 60s/ 70s Strip shopping mostly

Doncaster is a little newer in parts big shopping centre there too

Doveton is quite new & time wise a distance from the city.
Dandenong is also a way out but on a buisy freeway

Deer park housing from the 80's to modern some shopping centres quite culturally diverse now days

Heidleburg also a slightly older area close to a huge shopping complex and mixed ethnicity but also some lower income housing

Hoppers Crossing fair way out of the city like Dandenong but good freeway access to the city very multicultral & a growing area (i live Werribee) lots of schools private & pubic to choose from.

Huntingdale old area older housing

yeah I think Huntingdale and Doncaster would be the best bets ,,,

I lived in Heidelberg when i first came to Melbourne .. well Heidelberg West.. not that nice a place then ,, not sure now.

I can add to some of the others and fill in some gaps.

Doveton - very low on the socio-economic tree. Can be dangerous - I have kids and grew up near there but would not bring my kids up there

Dandenong - Near Doveton, but more of a major centre. Lots of recent immigrants in the area. Could be an up and coming area in the next ten years. There are nicer neighbourhoods and rougher ones in this area. Has the advantage of the train line to the city.

Huntingdale - on the train line. Decent reputation. Probably the one that I would choose from the list.
Good luck.

Heidelberg
I live there now and it is great, however, there are the good and bad parts. I live in the good part. Near Eaglemont and Ivanhoe. I think, if u have kids or are planning to have kids this is a great spot. I am 13 and am growing up here and love it. There are many great public and private schools around the area, there are great facilities and great people. I reccommend it. I'm not too sure about the pricing though. Don't get put off by street names. There is usally a way to change it if u choose to live in a lane.
Heidelberg west is the bad part. The exodist community live here. The people on crack and i've seen a few bad crimes happen there too.
Hope this helps. =]

I would suggest doncaster.
It has easy access to the eastern freeway and you can be at in the city in about 6 minutes during non- peak hour traffic.
Westfield Shoppingtown Doncaster is currently being renovated, and its going to be huge, one top ten shopping centers [size wise] in Australia.
It's a nice area, good facilites, really good secondary colleges, good for children etc.
Hoppers is way out in the western suburbs, western suburbs would be my last resort, but thats just me.
Dandenong is miles away from the cbd, and takes like 50 minutes on a train and in peak hour you wont be able to even get a seat for about 40 mins.
hidelberg is nice enough, ive spent some time there, dont know much about it though.
coburg is ok, although there are far better inner city suburbs. toorak, south yarra, st kilda and docklands for exampls.
i dont really know about the others though.

I agree with most of what's been said, but Hoppers Crossing is a LONG way out, halfway to Geelong. [Geelong is a small industrial city on a bay, 100 kilometres south-west of Melbourne].

Most of the places you mentioned are working class to lower middle class, with a large concentration of migrants from Greece, Italy, Vietnam and other places. They have good cheap shopping but not so good schools. None of them is particularly dangerous.

Heidelberg is often misrepresented, as it is a mixture of lower working class/chronically unemployed, and upper middle class on the nice hilly areas to the east. Some parts are very nice, thank you very much! and priced accordingly.

Of the places you mentioned, Doncaster and Heidelberg are probably the best. (Although I don't know Huntingdale, I note that it's not far from Monash University in the southeast, and has train and freeway access to the CBD.)

Melbourne is very spread out, and in general the poorer parts are in the west and the better parts in the east and southeast, though of course there are many exceptions to this rule. Of course, in general the better parts are more expensive, too.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to email me if you have further queries.

Coburg and Huntingdale would be very expensive, as they are close to the city. Doncaster and Heidelberg are also very expensive areas to live. Doveton, Dandenong, Deer Park and Hoppers Crossing would be quite similar, they are all much further away from the city - the first two in the south east, Deer Park in the North West and Hoppers in the south west. So if money isn't a problem, and you want to be close to town, I'd probably go for Coburg or Huntingdale. If not, you'd save a lot of money living a bit further out. I personally live very near to Hoppers Crossing, and find it a very pleasant place to live, I can walk down the streets at night without fear, the neighbours are friendly, it's quiet, there is a freeway which takes you straight to the city, and a railway line as well. All in all, it's a nice place to live, and not too expensive either!

Hi,
I am in same position and coming there in this Aug.
We could find Northern side as better one to leave and looking for house on rent especially in Brusnwick or nearby area. I suggest you study the map and try to locate certain areas which find near to CBD and also cohesive.
best of luck !

Ummmmm. Personally i wouldn't pick any of them to raise kids in - purely because of the lack of quality schools - I would however suggest that you avoid Dandenong entirely. Aside from the fact that it is quite a long commute if you intend to work in the city it is also a pretty rough area. Thats a rather polite way to put it....here - read this... http://www.janine.observationdeck.org/?p=21
oh - i take it back... Doncaster is a good one, and close to some decent schools for your kids!

Eeeeww to all of those

i wouldn't want to live in any of those
