Need advice on where to visit in Australia?

My wife and I are planning a 3 week trip to Australia in March or April. We are flying into Sydney but have no further plans yet. Would like some advice on what are "must see" sites and cities.

Depends on what you are after....Do you like camping? Do you want to see Australia in its most natural form or do you want to see the main cities??
If you want to see Water holes that have waterfalls and just come from nowhere in the desert, than the Pilbara & Kimberley regions in WA are fantastic...You do some awesome 4WDriving for hours than end up at these beautiful oasis's....The Northern Territory is similar & don't forget Uluru (Ayers Rock) In Alice Springs, south of Darwin. North Queensland has beautiful tropical Rainforests as well as similar country to Nth WA & Nth Territory....All your main cities...Sydney - East Coast (Sydney Harbour Bridge & Opera House).... Melbourne - South East - Good for cafes, dining out, shopping & nightlife....
Tasmania - Very south east - Beautiful scenery & cold..... SA - hmmm... I like SA, but its a bit similar to Perth where I'm from - love the place but nothing too spectacular...I'm from the North-West originally so I would recommend Karajini National Park.

As long as you are going to be in Sydney, take a tour to the Blue Mountains, but make sure it is a sunny day. If it is overcast, the mountains will be too. It is like their version of the Grand Canyon except that it is covered with eucalyptus trees that give off a blue haze. Be sure to buy an ulu knife. Wouldn't trade mine for anything. Gastown is great in the evening but be alert. The cities are very far apart so it would depend on what you enjoy. Up to Cairn for the great barrier reef. Down to Melbourne to see the sunset migration of fairy penquins.

Don't miss Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. Tasmania is also beautiful at that time of year, especially around Hobart.

The Lonely Planet series is a great guide. I even use it myself for my own state. There is more on the east coast than on the west coast, unless you like lots of desert. Sydney is great for the harbour, and nearby Blue Mountains. Victoria has the great ocean road and the fairy penguins on Phillip Island. There is Byron Bay in northern NSW and Fraser Island, the daintree and barrier reef in queensland. if time go and see ayres rock. Because you have 3 weeks you will need to fly to all these places.

yea dont miss Melbourne ! Brisbane is nice too, it takes about 1 hr (there's a time different) by flight. when u r there, go to Sunshine Coast & Goldcoast. enjoy the beaches there ! its AWESOME !

travel_stories
It depends on what you like. If you go north to Queensland and Brisbane - you could go via the Hunter Valley, Port Macquarie is nice, and up through the Gold Coast. You may just want to do the Port Macquarie circuit - through the Hunter one way and down the coast which is a nice drive.Or you could go to Melbourne. You may prefer to fly between cities. Australia is a vast country and you will not see much of it in 3 weeks.Driving between cities takes time.

You would want a few days in Sydney. Then go either north or south .I doubt you would fit in much more in that time, unless you flew to Melbourne, and Brisbane.
