Try Webjet Travel - you can compare flight prices and see if it really is too expensive:

Greyhound bus service is very cheap.Costs less than $100 each/adult one way(think less for kids).Takes 1 day.

Theres a groovy grape bus. Its a touristy bus that stops off at the sights. They do it as a 3 day tour. The link below gives a price of $340 for 3 days and 2 nights. I dont know if this is more or less than the rail/air. I've done a similar trip and it is worth seeing the Great Ocean Road. Its a popular route for backpackers and I'm sure there are loads of companies and prices. Try a lonely planet/rough guide or ask at a travel agents they will have details.

Try standbycars.com. They have a section with hot deals and u might be able to hire a car to do this journey for about $5 per day. The reason it is so cheap is that the company need the cars to be moved between depots as quickly as possible. So, u may only be given a couple of days to do the journey. But if you don't mind that, then it mite be a good deal for u. They give u a fuel allowance as well. I haven't done it myself but may consider it in the future!
