New Zealanders?

Have you ever thought about getting rid of the British little flag? On the top left?

Nothing against the Brits. Just a cultural thing?

I think there is no doubt that New Zealand will one day become a republic, but most probably within the Commonwealth. At that time the Union Jack will be removed from our flag, whatever design may be adopted. However, the climate today is not right for such a change. The issue of changing the flag has been raised a number of times but has never gained any real traction. Simply put, there is not sufficient passion or support for a change. In general, we enjoy our current links to Europe via the UK and the special privileges they give us. Additionally, the generations of men that fought side by side with British forces in various world conflicts are still alive and the people of New Zealand still value their contribution and the flag for which they fought.

As demonstrated by our rejection of nuclear power, our refusal to support the Iraq war, and our replacement of the UK Privy Council with our own Supreme Court, we have demonstrated that our links to the UK do not prevent us from standing by our beliefs even where they conflict with those of our friends. We are maturing as an independent nation and over time we will continue to focus our sights on Asia/Pacific in order to become part of its growing influence in the world. Our evolution to a republic will not represent a rejection of the UK or its monarchy but more a demonstration of our maturity and growth from a colony to a full independent self governing nation.

We have looked into it. In particular our government spent some time looking into the potential of becoming an independent republic and breaking away from the the Commonwealth.

All things being equal, the status quo appeared to be the decision. At the end of the day, most New Zealanders are apposed to the war in Iraq, and we certainly didn't jump to Tony's aid.

It allows us to compete in the commonwealth games which is great!

New Zealanders are probably too easy going to even worry too much about it. :-)

The argument to change the NZ flag has been raised several times over the years but there has been very little agreement on what a new flag should look like and additionally the argument really has not come that far off the ground to warrant a serious discussion.

For the most part I think most kiwis like our connection with Britain and I don't think the majority of kiwis really care that much about it -- as long as the AB's win the rugby we'll be right!

No definitely not. It is called the Union flag, or the Union Jack.(the little one in the corner philistine)
I can trace my family back to the first settlers from Britain, and am proud of that, as much as I am as what we have become as a country

1, its the union jack, and two, even thou im not nz, im aussie, i wouldnt want nz or aus to change there flags.
Its part of our country, our commonwealth and us.
