New life in international society? i want to leave the US. is it a good move? |
I;m living in the US, and i want to move out of ameirca. america is a very lonely country. you cannot you cannot make many friends here unless it's via your own cliques and people aren't that approachable. in fact, you can live in most places in ameirca, and not even know the names of your neighbors! it's also very expensive in a lot of the US. my question is: is moving to australia or new zealand a better choice, for the most part, though no place on earth is perfect? |

May I answer you by asking a question to you?
Do you think you can really find that out without trying it?
I moved to New Zealand half a year ago, my motivation was to make some new experiences and see how life in New Zealand is. I came from Germany. There will always be different opinions, in my opinion New Zealand is a great place to be. Australia most likely too (at least it was a great place for vacations). Comparing it to the US, I would say Australia is a little bit closer to the US (from environment, habits) than New Zealand, but in general you might make great experiences in both countries. If you will make friends easily is depending on where you are living (it's harder in towns and easier in villages) like everywhere else in the world, but I would say both countries are easy going and making friends is not a big problem.
From the experience that I made, I would say: Just try it, you got nothing to loose except of some money. |

If I was you I would go for it, either NZ or Australia. I lived a working holiday in the UK for 2 years, and I had more friends there than I have ever had at home here. When you are not 'at home' in your usual environment, you will find that you HAVE to put yourself out there and make friends. And you will probably find you click with like-minded people who have also made the effort to get out of their own country! It's easy going to Aussie/NZ as far as people go, we are friendly! Everyone says so! And having seen alot of the world, we ARE. My sister-in-law is american, she loves it here. It's a big step to leave your own country, esp on your own, but you won't regret it. And if you do, you can just go back.
Good luck. :) |

Actually USA has a remarkably low cost of living when compaired to other counties, a gallon of gas is 2-3 times more expensive outside the US, taxes in foreign countries are almost universally higher. I don't know where you got the idea that it is cheaper to live outside the USA.
As for meeting new people, that is a matter of interpersonal relations .... in other words YOU. YOU need to make a conscious decision to make new friends, it's not America's fault. I predict no matter where you live, you'll have a hard time making friends. |

Moving to a new country, is risky and rife with challenges if not problems. you might be in for a culture shock, if you are not particularly knowledgeble of the area you are moving to. you might also have difficulties finding a friend who will be true to you in that area another thing is how will you support yourself to where you are moving to. rascisim is very rampant in australia.
if you realy want to move it would be good if
1. you already have at least one trustworthy friend willing to help and guide you in the area.
2. have a sure job opening waiting for you.
3. financialy stable and independent
god bless and take care |

I have lived in Australia my entire life and find that most people are very friendly and it is easy to make friends. I have lived in capital cities and regional and rural areas. I have generally found that it it easier to make friends outside capital cities, there is a real sense of community in regional areas.
If you are friendly and approachable, I am sure you will make friends quickly. There are also lots of clubs/sporting groups that you may like to join to meet people.
Good luck and welcome to Australia!!! |

There's an old story about a couple who stopped in a town and asked an old man sitting on a bench "What's this town like?" The old man asked them what it was like where they were. "Oh it's wonderful! We have so many friends, and our life is so full, but the company wants us to move here". "Don't worry" the old man said. "It's just like that here too." Later that afternoon another couple stopped and asked the same old man the same question. He replied in the same manner. "Oh it's horrible! We don't even know our neighbors, and our children don't get along with anyone!" "I'm sorry" the old man said. "It's just like that here too."
I'm from the States. I loved it there. I spent 2 years in NZ/Aus and I loved it there too. They loved me back.
If changing venues changes your attitude, by all means move. Otherwise, bake a cake and take it next door and meet your neighbor. |

People are approachable. Are you? Whether you go to Australia or New Zealand you will have to put yourself out there. You might try once again and see. Find a group that you have common interests in. Yes, even then you will find cliques. And you may enjoy it. If you are always on the outside looking in. Now, maybe the time to learn how to be on the inside.
Maybe a fresh start is the answer. I understand that Australia has strict immigration laws. Not so sure about New Zealand.
Personally, I plan on retiring in Thailand in the future. But, that is my personal choice. I feel very comfortable there and the cost of living is very low in comparison to the US.
Good luck. |
