Off the beaten path places to visit in Australia??

I'm going to Australia, I want to be a traveler, not a tourist. Any suggestions for cool places that aren't tourist traps??

No tourist traps just go to any town off the main road's small towns out bush are nice, stay at the pub (cheap accommodation)meet the locals, if you don't be a know-it-all-smartass they will talk to you & tell you history & places of intrest in the area.Any state any town you will find some nice informitive people

G`day

Go to the Grampians mountain range in Victoria, its beautiful.

Also if youre heading west, head up the coast, to Ningaloo Reef.

But like the others said, go to any country town, step into a pub and meet the locals.

Have a great trip mate!!

Have a look at this site for ideas http://www.ozexperience.com/index.php. I have a friend who comes over from the UK and always does at least one of their tours as they are not the normal tourist traps. Enjoy your trip

wilsons prom is really beautiful for taking long hikes up mountains and across water.most of the great places to see are touristy.around darling harbor and circular quay in sydney is nice to see, but only to say youve been there.instead of going to taronga zoo or melbourne zoo, go to healsville sanctuary in victoria to see our beautiful animals.its much more fun than the big zoos as you get to touch the animals and go into the enclosures with them.the beaches up the north coast of nsw are beautiful and dont have as many tourists as manly or bondi beach.you can also go white water rafting at penrith which is about 45mins to an hr west of sydney.they have a man made white water rafting stadium which was built for the olympics.the waters warm its safe and its a huge amount of fun.ayers rock is beautiful but its touristy.id still recommend going and climbing it once atleast!have fun! im excited for you.us aussies have a really amazing country

I'm an Aussie so here ya go.

Hanging Rock
Ayres Rock
The Twelve Apostles
Phillip Island
St. Kilda Beach
Mornington Peninsula
Great Ocean Road
Great Barrier Reef
Gold Coast
Southern Hill
Australia Zoo ( all aussie wildlife that won't cost you your life to see)

Just some of many many many places

Mt Isa for the most god-forsaken out of the way community on earth. (QLD)

Nimbim in QLD if you like to smoke ganja or want to see a self sufficient commune in the rainforrest (you can sleep in a train carriage they've hauled up there).

Most backwater towns are pretty small, dry and populated with bogans (Aussie rednecks). I'd check out the amazing mountain ranges in NSW & VIC (Blue mountains and the Grampians).

Thing is, most places are pretty touristy.

try the blue mountains or country regions in Vic and NSW, beautiful places for hiking and wildlife adventures.
