I live in Balmain myself and love it. It's close to the city, ticks everything on your list so I think you'd be happy here. The only thing I don't like is that is very coupley.....but that probably wont bother you?! Other suburbs I think would fit the bill for you are; Paddington, Centennial Park, Bondi Junction, Woolahra, Newtown, Darlinghurst, Elizabeth Bay and Surry Hills. Just fyi there is an awesome dog friendly beach 2.5 hours south of Sydney at a place called Culburra. Awesome for a weekend away.

Try Glebe and Newtown. Sydney University is between the two and there are plenty of good shops and restaurants, nightlife, good pubs etc. Newtown has a big park behind St Stephen's Church known locally as dog poo park where people exercise their dogs off the lead. Beaches are a few kilometres away but there are good trains and buses. Newtown is liberal, tolerant and diverse with a strong gay population. You can walk to the CBD in about 30-40 minutes if you don't want to take a bus or the train. Next door to Newtown is Erskineville which is much the same although, perhaps, a little quieter. Glebe has no trains but it does have a good bus service and parks for dogs down near the water.

I work in Redfern. It fits very few of your criteria (but it is improving all the time.)

What do ya mean "no friends" heck, you have one already, oh, and thanks for the ten points. Almost all inner city burbs have what your looking for but I still maintain Balmain is the only way to go, and to back up my claim I'd be happy to show you around myself, thats all of Sydney, not just Balmian. Just shoot an e-mail my way!

It really depends on your budget as well as your preference for life style.

In general, DINK (double income no kid) families prefer inner city suburbs such as Balmain, Pyrmont, Darling Hurst, Potts Point, Bondi Junction, etc to name a few.

If you like good cafe style living that isn't too far from beaches then choose lower north shore suburbs such as Mosman, Neutral Bay, Cremorne or a bit further north, such as Chatswood, Artarmon, Willoughby or eastern suburbs such as Randwick, Bondi Junction, Coogee, Kingsford, Kensington, etc.

Hi guys. I was in your situation 7 months ago. I relocated from Belfast after living there for 3 yrs (originally from Singapore). As I am single I was willing to rough it out for the first few months before deciding where to move. I am working in the far west (Parramatta) and got a place near my work place temporarily for about 3 months. Then I moved to Homebush (inner west and along the western line) early this year. Like you guys, I didn't know anyone when I first moved. The main criteria for me was to be somewhere in the middle of things and homebush has been great so far. Its in between work and the city so neither is too far away. Plus of course, Homebush is a rather quiet suburb and its nice enough to relax after work and just 20 mins by train to the city if I fancy a night out in the city. I suppose it would take some time to figure out what works for you guys but it would all work out in the end. I would recommend www.domain.com.au for whats being offered in terms of renting/sharing or even buying. Oh btw I have also made some good friends here since. Good luck with the move.
