Okay, my dear Aussies, another Sydney question: Are there some things I should stock up on in the US before... |
... before I move to Sydney for 2-3 years? I have heard rumors that certain things are far more expensive there. Anything of note? (Besides good tequila, of course...) I sure it goes both ways, what with bush tucker being nearly impossible to find in Brooklyn...
Thanks! ;) Additional Details ***I knew it might nettle a few mates to suggest there was ANYthing lacking down under- but I assure you, I am merely cheap! Also, I am fully aware of all customs regulations. It's just that I heard (from an AU lady) that skin/body products were far less expensive in the US, so she stocks up while in NYC. I was just wondering if there might be other things... |

cosmetics and skincare products are most definitely are cheaper in the US as is cologne/perfume, sunglasses, CDs and luggage. Sports shoes, sports gear and serious winter gear (not that you need that much of it in sydney) is also much cheaper in the US. and especially Reeces PBC's - if you can find them in australia they are not as nice and far too expensive :-).
Everything else should be fine. Be sure to indulge in good aussie wines and you will not miss the tequila as much as you think you might. Enjoy! |

All the above answers are pretty accurate, but bear in mind, we have the same strict rules in relation to security these days, so you may not be permitted to board an aircraft at your point of departure with more than a sandwich sized bag of cosmetics and lotions etc.
You can get everything you need here, but avoid the airport duty free shops as they charge like wounded bulls.
There are many factory outlets and 3 or 4 large markets where you can buy almost anything at a fraction of the normal retail prices.
I might be lacking imagination, but I can't think of a single thing you would need to stock up on prior to your arrival.
Good luck. |

Butterfinger candy bars. Difficult to find in Sydney, if not impossible. Otherwise, you will find everything you need in Sydney. |

You will be able to get every thing you want while you are in Sydney. Don't believe in rumors. If any thing you could not find in Sydney that would not be available any where else in the world. We did not feel things are bit expensive here. Almost all the things are priced reasonably.
So stop thinkig and start packing.
Come and enjoy the beauty of SYDNEY.
Wish you goodluck |

I'm not sure you should ask us Aussies that!! We would hate to think that Sydney is other than a cosmopolitan paradise where all your shopping needs are completely catered for.
A Sydney-resident US expat might have some idea about specific products to include, including what to do about all your 110v appliances. Remember that Australian quarantine regulations will stop you bringing in a lot of foodstuffs such as those that contain milk, chicken and other meat. If you haven't done so, check out the AQIS website (see link below).
What I have found when travelling is that one quickly identifies substitutes for most things, some things have different names but are exactly the same, and there are really very few things you will not be able to get.
ps Enjoy your time in Oz.
pps Your information on cosmetics etc is correct. These are the only things my wife ensures is consistently on my shopping list coming back into Australia! |
