physical 'look' = Varied
personality = Varied

Much the same as other countries that I have visited or lived in, Australians come in various shapes, sizes and personalities.

Some are nice, some are obnoxious, although most seem to be nice.

Overall, Australia is a very good option when comparing many other countries.
I am from England.

Aussies are a friendly and easy going bunch of people, physical look?? Normal like anybody else on the planet, due to immigration we are a mixed nation so there are aussie citizens of mixed nationalities.

I live in Australia and have all my life. I'm only 15 years old but I have an excellent understanding of the country's lifestyle. Well with every country, there are good and bad people but on the whole Australia is made up of very polite couple. I live in the state of New South Wales. It is a highly multicultutal society with many nationalities, the common ones being: Italian, Maltese, Lebanese, Polish, Asian and of course Australian itself. Most Australians communicate well with tourists (right now for World Youth Day people have pilgrims staying at their houses). We are highly generous and we always offer people the best.

I was born in nz but moved to aus when i was 4 yrs old. I find australians to be really nice and laid back. Great sense of humour but they arent perfect like any other country. Some people like to ruin it for others with their discrimination and their attitudes. Other than that its great

I went to Austraila about 5 years ago and stayed for 2 weeks.
I thought that the people over all were nice. Like if you waved to a stranger they would wave back instead of look at you like you're about to rob them. They are more laid back and make nicknames for people a lot.
Most of the people are white, but there are lots of Asian people too.
They dress like most Americans do, but not as much blue jeans.

PS** to pete davo above - I can't say that I agree with your comment about Australian City People having 'wog' accents - I only know one person who has a woggy accent, and her parents are Greek - most people don't.

PPS** and I also have never heard our accent being described as "strine".

PPPS** and we're not all blond. I am, but most of my friends arent.

I am an Aussie from Melbourne.

We're all pretty different, even just thinking about my classes at school there is such a difference between everyone.
I think in general compared to many countries we are quite laid back and friendly.

Other than those very generalised, stereotypical traits, there isn't that much that is a very similar aspect to everyone's lives.

As to physical look, it varies from place to place.
In the cities, particularly Melbourne and Sydney, we dress, in general, quite well (although there are exceptions to the rule - it really depends on the suburb you're in).

Melbourne has been likened to a European city (not a specific city, it just has a slightly european feel, maybe its the cold weather haha).

As you go north along the east coast, it gets hotter and hotter so the physical appearance of people changes a lot.

West coast, no one really goes there anyway haha.

Also as you move towards the centre, the dress code becomes, amazingly, more country-ish -- jeans, boots, polarfleece if it's cold down south and shorts, tshirts and havaianas up north (or in summer all over).

As someone mentioned above, we are apparently the fattest nation with 26% overweight or obese, I think it was.

Although if you think about it we only have 21 million people so even though as a percentage we're fatter, if you think about the number of Americans there are in comparison, 25% of them are obese.

Personally I don't see too many fat people around, again as a bit of a stereotypical generalisation, we're pretty healthy and outdoorsy, at least all my friends and family very much enjoy sport and the great outdoors!

The accent that many people refer too as being slightly cockney is the more extreme Aussie accent - like Steve Irwin's.
Let me assure you we don't all speak in that way!
Australian English could probably be considered partly English English and partly American English, but our spelling is the same as in England.

I think also the way in which we pronounce words is more English, but the accent is different.

I don't think that we can be considered uneducated. I think our level of education is very high here in Aus.

Although this is obviously not true (unless someone tells me otherwise :S, and I can't say I particularly know from personal experience), merely a generalisation and stereotype picked up from the media etc; I see Americans as being the uneducated ones - and also being quite tacky compared to Australians.

I know this is not a fair assumption but while I was ranting on about Australians I thought I might as well mention it :)

Hope you didn't die of boredom reading this!!

I'm from England. I lived in Oz for about a year. I thought Aussie's were super-nice, and Oz was really pretty, but I thought the cities were a bit boring. The people were great though - good sense of humour. Their "look" was similar to any Western country - lots of fatties, some fit and healthy.
The fashion was different though: lots of wife beaters and scruffy clothes but then it is very hot there.

Good times, good people.

molly
Good sense of humour and pretty laidback
Amanda Panda you made me laugh because most Aussies can't tell the difference between Canadian and and American culture in fact there isn't a difference is there.

Aussies are much more likely to be tall, blond and rugged looking. Like the actor Jack Thompson.

They have this accent that they call "strine". It's got a lot of rhyming slang in it like the Cockney accent, but with a different inflection to anywhere else. And each state is slightly different - ask a West Aussie how to say "Albany" and a Eastern Stater to say "Albury" and you'll see what I mean.

The Australian City folk tend to be more recent migrant arrivals and so they don't have much accent, or they have what Aussies call a "wog" or a "pom" accent, or even an Americanised accent from watching too much TV.

People under 30 in Australia probably don't even know they are in Australia, let alone know what a "drongo" is.

Melbourne and Sydney are totally different to the rest of Australia. They have totally different cultures to the rest of us. Probably because of their 'multiculturalism' and that they are having an economic recession where as the rest of Australia is booming and has a far more vibrant outlook and friendliness to visitors.

Bardy
Aussies physical look, 6ft 13ins 2 horns and have scaly skin. Well what did you expect us to look like.
