It depends on when you're travelling. If within the next 3 or 4 weeks, 2 or 3 layers (short and long sleeves and pants) plus a warm top for Melbourne and perhaps Sydney should do the trick. The biggest problem with buying clothes here is that for some insane reason in mid winter, all of the shops clear out their winter gear and summer gear is all you can get and vice versa in the middle of summer. By all means, buy some things in Oz, but don't plan on getting the majority of your wardrobe here. If you adopt the layer approach, 20kg will be heaps with room left over for Oz purchases and souvenirs.

Remember the cardinal rules of smart packing:
1) lay out everything you absolutely MUST take
2) reduce that by 50%
3) halve it again and pack the remainder. I guarantee you still won't wear everything you've taken.

I live in Melbourne and am a very regular visitor to the gold coast. [family lives there] sydney is somewhere in between.
Gold Coast is never freezing, but never boiling.
Melbourne will get all 4 seasons in one day, it could be absolutely freezing one day and boiling the next, but considering your coming in winter, expect temperatures of between 5 degrees celcius and 15.
here, clothes arent cheap but yeah.

hi i went to oz for 5 weeks and took all clothes with us, its loads of clothes, honest, and clothing is very expensive over there......depending when you are going, just pack for season.....there seasons are opposite to ours (uk) and have a good time, wish i was coming with you

Pack to suit the weather firstly. Pack about 5 tops, 5 bottoms, PJ's, footwear and of course toiletries. try washing your clothes once or twice a week and maybe buy a few tops or bottoms there. if you have space pack more tops or bottoms. remember to only pack what is needed and no more.

Pack a few summer clothes ( for QLD & Dubai) Pack some mid range ie jeans & tops & then pack a couple of warm tops and a Jumper ( sweater/ Pullover) and bring on the plane a warm jacket/coat.

Melbourne is a cool climate in winter Aussies think its cold but its not that cold compared to mid to northern european temps.

Bring half of what you think you will need or buy a cheap suitcase to fill up for your return trip via Dubai, remember you can't take liquids over 100ml on board, no tweezers in your handbag nothing. Bring comfortable shoes so you can shop alot, if you are coming soon the weather has been strange lately so you could google the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and watch for a week before you come. Don't bring things like hairdryers, you can borrow when you get here

Given that you're going to several different climates I'd have to say pack some of your summer things and underwear and buy the winter gear when you get here (it's winter here). Op Shops are plentiful and you can pick up stuff for cheap.

Australia has several facilities for washing clothes, and your family will have a washing machine. You do not have to bring clothes for the whole trip. Also, remember that the baggage allowance applies in both directions

Well i just came back from the phillipines.. And i packed a week of clothes and i brought 25 kg of baggage.. and the rest i put in my hand carry. But the thing was that i left half of my clothes there because its more of a poor country.. And ibought the rest of my clothes at the malls.
You can do that and buy clothes there... but it might not be cheap.. it could be expensive... So look up the prices over there..and see if its best for your budget to buy them there or bring your own.

Oh yea, when you exchange money from american to foreign. The airport will charge you for converting money... so its best to do it over at australian bank...

Yep, im doing the same thing.

im going for 6 weeks and will just buy all my clothes once i get there. plus, I have no idea what the weather is going to do anyway. I wouldnt want to get there with a suitcase full of shorts and t-shirts and find out it is raining for a month.

Take enough clothes to last atleast a few days..... clothes are kind of expensive sometimes... And you will be washing clothes right? lol

and make sure you dont buy too much.. because if you do, you will end up being over the limit..

When i go overseas.. i always buy too much and come home with a 25 - 30kg bag.. and a heavy hand carry.. Same situation as someone else above .. I leave half my clothes in the Philippines, and come back with new clothes.. and presents and random things

That is 44 pounds, which is actually more than it sounds like. I would pack a couple really comfortable outfits and then buy the rest.

20 kg is quite a lot of luggage . make sure you suitcase is as light as possible as this can rob you of weight. You can also take a carry on bag which weighs up to 7 kilos but the size is limited it must fit in the over head lockers. Shop at Harbour Town on the Gold Coast.

That's a good idea!! It is so pretty here and you will really enjoy it. When are you going. You know its winter here.

Don't take any big cans of aerosol. Customs took a big can off us. (They're still paranoid.)

TAKE TWO BAGS if you want to take more than 20kg, say two less than 15kg. The baggage handlers will thank you and if you check it out you may find that there is a minimal or no charge depending on the check in clerk.
