Perth Or Melbourne ????

I have narrowed my choice to living in one of these two cities. I prefer:

1. A place that isn't too crowded (i live in London atm which is ridiculously overcrowded)
2. Not a bustling city, more relaxed in between rural and urban.
3. Near a coast
4. Some tourism (not too important)
5. Diverse
6. Hot

Thank you for making it such a clear question. On your criteria, Perth is an easy winner.

1. Perth has a population of about 1.5 million. Melbourne has about 3.8 million. To be honest neither is as crowded as London, but Perth is a lot less crowded.
2. Perth is more relaxed. It is not exactly rural though.
3. The suburbs of Perth stretch out along the coast for about 100km now, so you should be able to find somewhere coastal. Melbourne has the bay, but its not in the same league and it is more expensive to live near the bay.
4. Melbourne wins on the tourism, mostly by being a bigger city, but also because it is not as remote from the rest of the world as Perth is.
5. Melbourne wins on diversity, but Perth is a reasonably multicultural kind of place now.
6. Perth is definitely hotter than Melbourne. Personally, I think that's a reason to choose Melbourne, but each to their own.

And yeah, Adelaide might be even better than Perth on most of your criteria.

Elliot
Well it's not in the same league as London, but Melbourne is certainly more crowded and bustling than Perth. Melbourne has a lot more tourism though. I suppose I'd recommend Melbourne, although I think Brisbane or Adelaide would actually fit your criteria more closely.

I have lived in both Perth and Melbourne, and both cities have a lot going for them. Because of the weather, Perth is a very outdoors kind of city. Perth has a big expat community because of the oil and gas and mining industries there, hence I found it very easy to meet new people. Socializing is generally at pubs or BBQs in the backyard. I love Perth's weather better, however some people find it too hot. Melbourne is a more stylish, cosmopolitan city. They have some of the best restaurants in Australia and great bars and clubs (Perth's liquor licensing laws are antiquated and their restaurants are nowhere as near as good).

If you have a family I would definitely recommend Perth, if you are single or don't have kids, you need to chose between cosmopolitan and chic (ie Melbourne), or a bit daggy, but laid back with better weather and beaches (Perth).

Jamo
I cant believe the majority are saying Melbourne. Perth fits your criteria perfectly and has the ideal infrastructure. Buses within the city CBD are free, or you can jump on a train or ferry with an all day ticket which cost very little. Perths suburbs hug the coast and is built so the houses don't hog the waterfronts, and each suburb has its own mini shopping centre with all the essentials.. Plenty of markets, breweries, wineries, cafe's, entertainment, sports, history, plus an abundance of Western Australia's infamous wildflowers. Seals, dolphins and whales cruise past, and anywhere in Australia you can fly to another city for approx. $500 return. Too easy.

I would say Perth based on your list it is a city but still retains the country aspect its right on the coast and can be hot.
Melbourne is also a great place but after visiting it certainly is all hustle and bustle.

Melbourne

Perth.

Perth is usually dryer and hotter than Melbourne. At least Melbourne weather is adaptable as well as changeable. If you want to live near a coast then I suggest Warmabool for they are a country town more relaxed and plenty of nice views including the Great Ocean Road you can't beat that..

no where in australia is as busy as london. i suggest melbourne, perth will feel more like a country town!
but perth is hotter in summer. so again melbourne because our hot is your boiling hot.
melbourne is also far more diverse and on the coast, whereas perth is further in land.
