Save neighborhoods in Sydney? |
Hi, I am moving from Chicago to Sydney soon and am trying to figure out that are the good and bad areas. I am looking for a cheap place so will likely move to a place out side the city and inner suburbs.
We have a great website in Chicago, http://gis.chicagopolice.org/CLEARMap/startPage.htm, that allows you to look up all the crimes that have been reported in a given area. Is there anything like this for the Sydney area?
Also, in general, how safe is Sydney compared to Chicago?? And is Sydney like Chicago in that some areas are great and others might as well be a warzone?
Thanks! |

I could not tell you what crime is like in Sydney compared to Chicago, because I do not know much about Chicago, I can give you a general idea of Sydney though.
The bureau of crime website has some good links.
www.lawlink.nsw.gov.au
Here are some publication links:
http://www.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/lawlink/bocsar/ll_bocsar.nsf/vwFiles/sydney_06_part1.pdf/$file/sydney_06_part1.pdf
http://www.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/lawlink/bocsar/ll_bocsar.nsf/vwFiles/sydney_06_part2.pdf/$file/sydney_06_part2.pdf
Although, these are more for inner sydney.
This link below is also really helpful if you have your eye on a particular area, as you can find out crime trends by region:
http://www.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/lawlink/bocsar/ll_bocsar.nsf/pages/bocsar_lga_region
The site also lets you search for specific crimes and specific areas, by clicking on the links on the left hand side (particularly 'crime statistics' and 'online data tools'. I know that there is a document released every so often that tells you in order where the highest crime areas are - but I can't remember how to get to it, sorry.
I can't speak for all of Sydney, as I live in the North West, but off the top of my head, I would recommend avoiding western sydney areas such as:
Redfern
Auburn
Lidcombe
Blacktown
Mt Druitt
and parts of Parramatta and Penrith
They tend to be quite notorious for crime, especially around their train stations. The West hasn't got a great name for itself, but the north west is much nicer and safer in general, although much more expensive.
City areas such as Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills also tend to attract a little bit of trouble.
I am 20, and to date, have not yet encountered a serious problem with crime. I find that if you are with the right groups of people, avoid particular areas and do not walk into trouble, then generally there is not a problem.
In all, I would say that Sydney is a safe place to live. Even the crime 'hotspots' can be quite safe, depending on how you approach them. Although some areas can be dangerous, I wouldn't call any areas in Sydney 'warzones'. If you find a nice area, then you're absolutely fine.
If you aren't too fussed on price, I would probably recommend North Sydney areas, such as Baulkham hills (which is a little more west) or Ryde (which is a little closer to the city).
Either way, Sydney is a great place to live and from the stereoytpical idea we hear about Chicago, it sounds safer. I think living here is a great idea! ... .
Good luck!! |

We don't have any war zones. No matter where you live in Sydney keep yourself and home safe, be street wise, don't look for trouble and you will be fine. Enjoy! |

Sydney is almost completely gentrified. There are no especially bad areas. The inner urban areas are very posh now. Some of the middle suburbs can be dicey, but that's more to do with perception than actual risk.
Try Google Street View. If you find the local shopping strip (usually next to the rail station) has lots of shop signs in foreign languages, you may want to stay away, or you may find it interesting. Auburn and Cabramatta are the sort of places you might find questionable. Google em and see. |

I suggest the innerwest (Drummoyne/ Balmain/ Rozelle). These suburbs are fantastic, so close to city, good public transport and just have a great vibe!! I personally feel really safe in these areas.
Have fun when you move here!! |

Definately try to avoid the outer west even though if the cheap rent is enticing.
Try the inner west like Leichhardt, Petersham, Rozelle, Balmain. |
