I understand what you mean, Australia is so culturally similar to NZ more than any other country, it doesn't make any sense why we are not a country.

However, imagine if you were a kiwi, would you like your islands to be ruled by a little country town in the ACT called canberra? No of course not, because they know that NZ would be completely overwhelmed by Australia in every other aspect such as jobs, economy, etc, it's like giving away your sovereignty. However, as an Australian, if some sort of NZ-Aus republic did come into fruition, I wouldn't mind our capital in Wellington.

If such a union did come into existant, I would expect it to be called something along the lines of 'the republic of Australia and New Zealand'.

but I don't think it would ever happen. Simply because of the fact that the NZ would not stand a chance. If NZ and Aus were relatively the same size, with same population, same economy, then yeah maybe.

In fiction though: Wouldn't it be an amazing country if it did happen? Although I wouldn't want it to happen because of other reasons.

Edit: Why is there so much anger and hate? I'm Aussie, but I think NZ has something really special.... and no nukes! It'd be a shame to merge the two countries because they both have their own uniqueness.

I've got no objection to it. Other Pacific countries too for that matter. Although they would have to become part of Australia, not the other way around.

Its a strange idea we where once almost the same nation when New Zealand ran into trouble early in its history.

General no though its abit like saying that Canada and the US should merge. Australia and NZ have a lot of similarity's but they are also different cultures.

I love the kiwi's and we would have the best sports teams ever :) but
1 were to far away from each other,
2 we like being different to each other, and there is enough aussies in NZ and enough kiwis in Aus anyway. :)
3 alot of people from other countries already think we're the same country and i like proving them wrong.
4 we already claim each others celebs.

No - they are two separate countries with their own government.

I think they're both doing ok on their own. Although it would be nice if you didn't need a passport to visit NZ. I think you didn't need one about 20 years back but the rules changed at some point?

Like it or not NZ is unofficially a state of Australia when you consider there main banks are Australian owned and they buy Australian cars like the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcons it will be enviable when NZ is officially a Australian state.
