I reckon so. The distances between major cities in the north and Brisbane are massive. We always get overlooked when it comes to the Queensland gov spending money. Any one who has travelled the M1 north of Gimpie would probably agree. If the top end of Queensland was its own state they would be able to regulate facilities better for the population in the north. The capital could be Townsville or Cairns, and it would help develop our beautiful state. I don't think it would happen in my lifetime but maybe one day. What would you call the state? |

Why? Coz it such a big state? Have a look at the size of WA! I really don't hink Australia needs another state. More wasted money. |

It would be good in some sense, especially if Townsville or Cairns became the capital - Cairns being my first choice of course (since I live here LOL) and it's much nicer. The government needs to take a good look at health up here for a start. I mean you can't even get cancer treatment in Cairns. 99% of the people here have to fly to Brisbane to get help. Any Specialist appointments etc.. a nightmare. I have been on the waiting list for some surgery for 5 years in Cairns - took me 4 years just to get an appointment to see the Dr at the hospital. now he tells me I will NEVER get the surgery as the time allocated for this one Specialist Dr and the costs involved. So yes, i am on a waiting list, but will never get the surgery, doesn't that suck !
Everything is 'slow' up here compared to the Bigger cities, as everything has to go through to Brisbane basically.
Sometimes I think Cairns might as well be a third world country as it is underdeveloped economically .... |

No it should not because there is already enough money being thrown out and wasted by other states. We don't need more politics. |

No, in fact I think state governments should be abolished altogether. |

Why do they deserve their own state? I can't see the reasoning or logic behind the logistics involved in setting up a new state when QLD seems to be doing just fine as is... |

I think it should for sure.
The majority of the states money and political interests head to Brisbane and the south east. More money and infrastructure needs to be looked at for north Queensland. We are forgotten.... way up here! |

Yes, Rocky being the furthest south. And the capital should be Townsville; they are not so reliant on tourism to exist (as Cairns is). Lavarack Barracks, James Cook University, AIMS, ATO, Cowboys! etc etc, Townsville's got it all.
It already feels like the capital of the north anyway.
When you are in North Queensland Brisbane seems a million miles away. |

I think Brisbane along with the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast should be a state. |

No Way. What for... because it's a long way away from the state Capital.. What about WA.. I doublt Katherine, Broome are right next door to their state capital.. probably don't get much from the state government either. Do we hear them complaining? I would hate to point out but places in NSW aren't next door to their state capital either.. they have to travel great distances for hospitals. They don't get a lot of support from the government either. However if we were to scrap state governments do you think you would get any more support?? I would think not, instead of having states to worry about smaller places and areas, we would be forgotten altogether.
I had a friend they lived in Barraba, northern West NSW. Her father had to see a specialist he had to go to Sydney for the specialist. After travelling something like 8 hours to get there (maybe a bit less) the nurse told them they would not be seen today but they would have to go home and come back early the next morning. Not expecting to stay the night they did not take clothes. They left really early that day with plans on going home straight after the appointment because they had a farm to run.
So i don't think that you are the only state with great distances to travel, or that lacks health care, or infrastructure. Join the club we all do. So should we all become state? |
