Its a good idea if you plan it properly. Get yourself a years working visa from the Australian consulate. This will allow you to work six months (legally) out of your year in OZ. Work is not hard to come by if you're not fussy what you do. Most of it will be fruit-picking or bar-work but I got lucky and got a temp job in a lawyers office. Try to go out before the spring rush and try and (in my opinion) Perth and Adelaide would be a good place to start looking for work. Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold coast will be awash with "pommies" looking for work.
Save up as much money as you can before you go and make sure you get good advice. STA Travel and Travelmood are two companies that I cannot recommend highly enough and will give you the best possible advice. I spent a year in Australia a few years back and it was the best experience of my life. |

I did exactly that 3 years ago. I was so pissed off with long hours, crap wages and little recognition or job satisfaction. Best thing i ever did. I did not have a work visa as its hard to get one if your over 30 but had the best time of my life and i am 44 years old. The younger ones all got work and even though the wages were not that good it was great seeing how happy they all were.
I,m returning in February to have another long piss up and great time. Do it you wont regret it.
Even if you cant settle your only a plane flight from returning home. I bet you'll love it! Best of luck! |

Yes you should come and experience the culture (laidback). Everyone else has given you good advice so now you need to go to this web site http://www.immigration.gov.au/immigration.htm to find out about visas and working holiday options. |

I went on a working visa holiday to Australia in 1995 for a year. I was a nurse and got work eaasily in most places. Others I met there in hostels got work easily in cafes, as secretarys, mechanics, chefs-if you have a qualification then it's easy. Fruit picking is popular in some areas. I would go. Go with someone - it's better. You'll have a great time. It should do you good. have in mind what you might do when you come back. Don't do it just to run away from a bad situation. it could do you good if you make good use of it. |

You can't run away from your problems, but if it's just a change from the 9-5 you need go for it.
I went to oz for a year 2 years ago and had the time of my life. I even met my now husband out there while backpacking around.
Make sure you do a bit of planning and if you're 30 or younger get a working holiday visa. You can get them off the australian embassy website or through travel agents.
Avoid a certain travel agent that is very poplular with students and people aged 26 and under as some of my friends recently had major problems with whv for oz and nz bought from one poplular with students and young people....
You can get work easy enough in most cities, and there is always fruit picking available. Check out lonely planet guides for when the harvests are on in certain areas.
If you want to work in bars in Sydney, you will need to do a days training where you will get a certificate necessary to work in bars in new south wales.
Some backpacker hostels are great at helping you find work, especially the old firestation in fremantle, western oz.
Whatever and wherever you go you'll have a great time and meet lots of like minded people. |
