Should we change the Australian Flag ? |
I saw what I liked on a doco the other night it was a blend of two, the Southern Cross on a blue background with white stars on the left and divided in half by a golden boomerang than green on the right side of the flag, pretty cool I thought!
Also should Waltzing Matilda be the new National Anthem ? Additional Details Annje, seriously, I love the ads with Sam Kokovich, but really how are immigrants as Aussie as the First Inhabitants or the First Fleet decendants ? |

I still think the Union Jack is important as it speaks of our heritage, how much of our culture was established the past 200 or so years - historically important.
If they place the boomerang on the flag are they also going to place an icon for all nationalities that are equally Australian citizens?
ETA In answer to your question? Not sure if Im understanding right!! But anyone who has Australian citizenship is legally as Australian as the next person who is also a citizen. |

In fact, if you look at the history of our flag, you'll find Australians have NOT fought under this flag in many wars. When adopted officially in 1901 it was quite controversial and many thought it not Australian enough even then. However, the flag still had no legal status beyond the original British Admiralty authorisations which only related to use at sea. It wasn't until the Flags Act 1953 was passed by the Menzies Government that Australia finally had an official national flag, and one that was required to be flown in a superior position to any other national flag (including the Union Flag).
So I say we make up our own minds, not paying lip service to a British heritage that existed, true enough, once upon a time, but if you look at migration since WWII, you'll see many other cultures. I say this as someone whose ancestry is half British, and whose first ancestor came here in 1824. |

nah,i love the flag and our Anthem,I'm 32 and its what i know and respect as our national symbols/anthem,a boomerang is a joke and will show what? how close we are to our native Aussies (not) lets leave things the way they are,and lets not turn our flag into a politically correct cartoon and our Anthem into the most cringe material song we have (about a bl@@dy sheep). |

Yes to changing the flag - we're not British anymore!!
No to changing the Anthem, I love it.
PS I'm not generation Y......I just hate that song! |

I didn't see the doco but your description sounds cool, also like Waltzing Matilda.
Bring on the referendum for a Republic I say. |

I believe we will move to a new national flag - without the union jack in the near future. Just hope the design chosen includes the southern cross but leave out the kangaroos |

on one hand i would like to see the union jack gone but on the other i think of all those brave australians that fought for their country under this flag
Hard choice |

As many brave people lost their lives fighting for our freedom under this ensign... I hope we never disrespect their memory by getting rid of the current flag. I know some people don't like the Union Jack; but it is our heritage whether you like it or not. Hiding it away won't change the fact that Australia was once a British colony.
Having said that though, I believe the flag of the Koori nation should be flown alongside the Australian flag at all federal and state buildings.
I also think the "fighting kangaroo" flag should be officially recognised as our "sporting" emblem, and flown at all sporting events.
As for Waltzing Matilda... a song about a sheep rustler as a national anthem? I don't think so. I love the song (don't get me wrong); but I don't think it's something that should be sung as our flag is raised over the winners' dias at the Olympic games. |

no, its just like the monarchy. if its not broken why fix it?
also i think the eureka flag would have been good for a flag choice back in 1901 but the southen cross in that form has become a symbol of unionism and the labor party, although the way it is represented on the current flag is nice... |

The Australian flag should not be changed as it does show our heritage as said before, but I would like to see our Anthem changed to "We are Australians" I don"t know the correct name for this song. This song say's it all in each verse. Waltzing Matilda for Anthem GOD FORBID. |
