Should we get travel health insurance?

We are going to New Zealand for a month (from US). Should we purchase travel health insurance? How do we go about this? Can we get it through our current provider or is there a cheaper way? Thank you!

try http://www.simplyinsurancequotes.com/travel-insurance-quote.php
they have offices there and in the US

I would strongly recommend it when going overseas. If your room get cancelled, your luggage gets lost, you get sick (even just a Doctor's visit will cost a packet), or anything much worse. It's not expensive and is definitely worth it.

Do a bit of looking around online, car insurance companies, health insurance companies, banks, etc all offer travel insurance. You may get a discount by going with a company you already have a policy with.

Always better to have it

Have a look online for providers - of course ask your normal provider and then compare - depends on how old you are how and your medical history much it will cost

health-quotes.isgreat.org - here is my health insurance plan. As I remember they can provide such a service.

Doesn't "Travel Insurance" cover injuries and sickness anyway? (or may be in the US you have to buy separately?) Check what your "current provider" include and get all the cover you need. DO NOT take chances. Sure, nothing may happen but it only takes ONE bad piece of food in a shop or one taxi ride to make your trip VERY EXPENSIVE indeed.

Get comprehensive travel insurance. DO NOT travel overseas - anywhere - without it.

There is a saying "If you can not afford travel insurance, you can not afford to travel"

Cheese to you from Australia

Some countries handle the health needs of visitors gratis. I don't know about New Zealand. You might call their embassy/consulate and ask what they do if a visitor has a health problem. If it's like Canada or the USA, both pitiless corporate states, you'd best have the insurance.

contact your travel agent

yes purchase the insurance

it is very expensive if you have an accident

insurance should cost you around $70 - $100

You should definitely have comprehensive travel insurance and should shop around for the best deal. Don't buy whatever your travel agent offers without shopping around first as they're invariably more expensive and often not as good as the cover you can get elsewhere.

worldnomads.com has an excellent one (USD$95) and you should also get a quote from your current provider: though that may only cover the health aspect which you won't need if you have decent travel insurance. Good travel insurance (the kind that covers bookings, luggage etc) also includes emergency healthcare and that will be sufficient. It won't cover you for an ordinary non-emergency doctor's visit, but you're only going for a month so that won't be a problem.
