Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

Remember, almost all skin cancer can be removed with a simple excision, if it is treated early. BCC and SCC are very rarely fatal. Watch out for Melanoma, though. It is very aggressive and need immediate attention. Wikipedia has an excellent article to get you up to speed on what to look for.

Wear protective clothing, a hat all the time, and sit in the shade. Stay out of the heat of the sun.

Splash on sunscreen in sunny weather and stay in the shade ;)

Just wear a hat and sunscreen. It's true that it is a problem, but only if you go out and sit in direct sun for ike 15 minutes without any protection. It probably wouldn't be terribly comfortable anyway! It also depends on your skin. If you have a dark complexion, you are less likely to get sun damage.

Most Australians are checked for skin cancer every year, and therefore get treated as soon as anything is suspect.

In countries like the UK, very few checks are done for skin cancer.

How many Brits in the UK die from Skin cancer, compared to Australians ?

Deaths from Skin Cancer
Australia = 1,678 deaths from 380,000 + reported cases
UK = 2,300+ deaths from 72,000 + reported cases

Quote from UK cancer site: http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk
Most cases of skin cancer are easily treated and cured, so these skin cancers are often left out of national cancer statistics.

Quote from: http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/healthyliving/sunsmart/skincancer/
Registration of non-melanoma skin cancer, in the UK, is incomplete.
More than 72,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are registered each year but it is estimated that the actual number is at least 100,000 cases in the UK each year.
Around 8,900 cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year in the UK.
The number of cases has almost tripled since the early 80s.
Over 2,300 people die from skin cancer each year in the UK
In fact, there are more skin cancer deaths in the UK than in Australia, even though Australia has more cases of the disease.

Quote from Australia website: http://www.cancer.org.au/aboutcancer/cancertypes/melanoma.htm
More than 1200 people die from melanoma each year.

Its because there is no ozone layer over australia. Thats why so many aussies have skin like leather. I was there 2 years ago and got burnt within 20 minutes if i forgot to put on sunscreen.

yep matey! Don't go outside and you'll be fine!

Australia is not a hazard! You should appreciate the fact that you were given the opportunity to live here.

If some people are too ignorant to 'Slip', 'Slop', 'Slap'...Then that is a problem they have to deal with.

Although I suppose it does become everyones problem since it is the tax payer who contributes the most to the health care system...

What is the relevance of this question anyway? Do you often whinge about the most irrelevant things?

You wouldn't be English by any chance? ;-)
