Spiders in Sydney, eeeek!!? |
I'm considering a working holiday in Sydney, however, I have just seen pictures of the Redback and the Huntsman Spiders, and suffering from severe arachnophobia, I have completely freaked out and I'm now having second thoughts about the whole thing!! Please can you advise whether encounters with these spiders are common? |

I have lived in Sydney all my life and have never seen a dangerous spider. Nothing to worry about. |

In the city very uncommon, you have as much chance as bumping into a Kangaroo on the main street! |

Sydney is full of huge coackroaches, but never saw a single spider there! |

you aren't likely to see them in the city. You'll be fine. I'm living here now after a year-stint on the working holiday visa. Don't miss the opportunity. You'll regret it especially if it's over spiders.
By the way, huntsmen aren't venomous. |

Stay in the city!
I have bad arachnophobia as well and would just DIE if i knew one of those freaky things were near me.
Don't think you should cancel your plans on the fact spiders are going to possibly be there but just don't go out of your way to go to places they will most likely be... hence, stay in the city - oh and don't go camping!! |

in Sydney there are huntsman, redbacks and funnel-webs which are the most dangerous in the world. they tend to live in corners and often come into the house, resting or lurking on the walls. these spiders are often 10-15 cm long and highly venomous. |

I lived in Sydney for three years (admittedly in a unit) and in all that time, we saw just one funnel web - it was stuffed in the museum. (It's still there!) We saw the odd huntsman scurrying to get out of our way outdoors but hey, that's their territory. Huntsmen are not deadly anyway. The cockroaches were far more of a problem than spiders but they are not venomous, just a pain, and you can get your house sprayed against them.
Redbacks - nah, we saw a couple in Perth and we have them where I live now on the NSW north coast, but you just have to be aware of where they usually hang out (plant pot rims, corners of fences, clothes lines etc).
Keep a can of insect spray handy if you're really worried - that will kill any spider. You could also read up on first aid for spider and snake bites, just to give yourself more confidence.
Generally it's like any wildlife - treat it with respect. If you stay away from them, they will in 99 per cent of cases stay away from you. It really is true that these creatures are more scared of us than we are of them. We're much bigger and potentially deadlier, after all! |

Wow.. you wont see those spiders much in the city.. You wont even see many spiders anyway...
Spiders usually hide..
You wont be living in a tree will you? So dont worry about spiders.. Just because you saw pictures, doesnt mean you will come across them in your house :) |

Spiders live all over the world. Maybe even in your house, I would seek some therapy, seems you have been spooked by a movie or some fantasy story...reality is they are wonderful creatures and even though they outnumber dogs probably by billions, dogs are more of a danger to humans.
Huntsman we kept in our house on purpose as they are excellent to control other types of insects that are not so welcome. Redback prefer to stay out of sight so unless you turn over a rock you will have a hard time ever seeing one. Then they hardly want to jump out and bite you, they probably just scurry away. |
