Spraying in cabins on flights to Australia? |
Am going to Perth shortly with my husband and 3 young kids, 9, 5 and just 1. I have heard numerous stories about them spraying whilst you are in the cabin, presumably to kill off any hitchhiking bugs/insects. I would like to know if anyone knows;
1; Do they spray whilst you're on board around you?
2; What exactly is the spray; pesticide?
3; Do they spray your main luggage on return from Oz to kill off possible bugs/insects?
4; Has anyone had any problems with the spraying business, particularly affecting their kids?
Thanks! Additional Details I will be contacting the airline but wanted to know first hand experience from people thankyou.. |

All foreign airlines spray, usually into the air. The hostess walks thru the cabin holding 2 cans and sprays into the air. It's harmless and fairly odorless. On Qantas flights they don't spray directly but I've heard that the pesticide/insecticide comes through the normal air vents. I'm not sure of this.
1. Yes
2. No idea
3. Unlikely, we don't care what leaves the country.
4. No, I've never seen anyone have any problems with it. They warn you first and you can cover your eyes & mouth if you wish.
If you're flying Qantas, don't worry about it. Otherwise, contact the airline.
Have a good trip. |

They don't have funny blokes in shorts with knobbly knees anymore. Which is a real shame. The cabin crew introduce the insecticide into the air conditioning system. |

1. yes they do spray pesticide when you are on the aircraft( they give you plenty of warning before this and they spray whilst the aircraft is on the ground in oz..
2.its insect killer they use.
3.i know for a fact that hand luggage is sprayed as they srpay into the air con on the plane. dont know about luggage in the hold though i dont think they spray on return to the uk.
4.i had no probs they tell you that u can hold a peice of material over your nose and mouth and shut your eyes. they also say when they have finished spraying so you can open your eyes again!!
hope this helps!! |

I've travelled overseas, mainly Europe, from Australia annually for the past 7 years.
1. Only once has the cabin been sprayed and that was with an Austrian Airlines flight. The flight attendants walked through the cabin with a can in each hand and sprayed into the air above passengers heads. We were told there would be no side effects from the spray, but if people were worried to hold a tissue over their noses. There was no smell or residue. To my knowledge the spray did not affect anyone, and once it was done we just forgot about it.
2. Presumably it was a pesticide, but I guess safe for humans.
3. I'm not aware of any luggage being sprayed, and have never heard of this, although it might happen.
4. No, see response to one.

They aim the spray around the floor area, I assumed to get anything carried on your shoes. Not sure what it is exactly, but I think it was done just before you get off the plane. Australia, being an island, has very strict quarantine laws, so they don't spray when you leave Australia for somewhere else - just on the way in. I've never heard of any adverse reactions. |

ive been to perth a few times and have never been sprayed, They wont do it while in the cabin as you cant take spray cans onto a plane. Honestly ive never heard of it, it wouldnt be very effective unles they took all of your luggage out and sprayed it all. Check with the perth airport or the airline. But i seriously doubt it |
