Suburbs to Avoid (Sydney, Aus) - Asian Family?

Heyla!

We're a family of four (parents + daughter (20), son (6)) Singaporean Chinese looking to buy a three-bedroom apartment or house. Just wondering whether there were places in Sydney we should avoid because of unrest -- my parents are pretty worried about me walking home from the train station during late nights. ("There're not enough streetlamps!" XD)

Or, alternatively, I'd appreciate it if people could suggest places that are particularly suitable for an Asian family -- so I suppose this question isn't limited to suburbs to avoid.

At the moment we've Homebush West, Lidcombe, Denistone, Ashfield, Hurstville, Artarmon, and Epping on our list of consideration.

Thank you for any answers! :)

With all due respect - if you want an asian suburb, Stay in Asia !!!

If you want to come to Australia, come and meet some australians and live with Australians.

I'm sick of people coming from other countries and staying in their own suburbs and turning this country into a microcosm of their former country.

Sydney has a large Chinese population, hailing from China, HongKong and Singapore. Many Chinese live in Ashfield, Summer Hill, Epping, Carlingford, Beecroft, and Chatswood.
Generally speaking, the North Shore is considered "middle class" and populated by professional people. Epping, Chatswood and Beecroft are in the North Shore, Carlingford is more North west. Ashfield and Summer Hill is in the Inner West of Sydney and many Chinese who live in these suburbs come from Beijing and Shanghai. All of the suburbs listed above are considered safe, as are those on your list, with the possible exception of Lidcombe if you're wanting to use train travel. Good luck.

zeenoo .
Avoid Redfern, Mt Druitt, Cabramatta.......i recommend chatswood, parramatta or blacktown.....:)

I have lived near Hurstville for twelve years and recomend the area. I also have a three bedroom near new house for rent or for sale this house I built for myself so included the best of everything when I built. This is a quiet area away from the station yet close enough for easy access.

Cabramatta! No, don't seriously, very big Asian community but also not very safe during night. It does have good shopping during the day but you have to be careful.

I'll say the same as above and also Bankstown area. I've lived in Bankstown all my life and never had a problem at night also has some great schools here too. Chester Hill is also a great area to live in, it's very multicultrual. Good luck with it all.

well....not telling ya da places with lots of asian ppls...but i'll tell ya da balmain..and rozzelle..and..dromynne...and nearb places are good..!

i dont know how much asians you can find..but its nice places for home...
goodluck

more important than area is were will you be working and close to schools, shopping,as transport is taking lots of time in sydney,if you can walk to work and school, then live there

Avoid Merrylands, Cabramatta, Redfern etc.

Most of the northern beaches are upper class.

majickgypsy
if you are looking for a settled asian community eastwood, dennistone and epping are all good choices. avoid cabramatta; it has a bad reputation for crime, drugs and asian gangs.

Kensington, Kingsford, and eastern suburbs are huge well off asian migrants. I also think its because of the UNSW is close by aswell as china town in down town sydney. we also have the consulates in Maroubra and large asian community.

Give a glance and a good luck & welcom to Australia

Out of your list, the best places (for asian community and safety) would be Denistone, Hurstville and Epping. Hurstville is becoming more and more another Chinatown, and is in a very safe area in the south. Epping is middle class and expensive, as is Artarmon. Lidcombe I would cross off the list. Its too close to Auburn, one of the most ugly suburbs of Sydney.

If your parents have lots of money, then Chatswood and St Ives could be added to your list of places to look at.

There aren't really any areas of Sydney with 'unrest'. I realise you're referring to the race-riots in Cronulla, but I can assure you that was a one-off incident. I was born and bred not far from Cronulla, in the Sutherland Shire, and its one of the safest places in the world! Unfortunately, many of the people that horrible day were drunk and/or from other bad areas of Sydney. And the violence wasn't directed at Asians.

Tell your parents they worry too much. Lol!!!

I agree with Alienavia that there are no particular suburbs to avoid because of 'unrest'. The suburbs you've listed are okay but I wouldn't choose Lidcombe if I had a choice.

Christar
There are many nice suburbs in Sydney. You need to figure out your budget as well. there aren't really any suburbs that you have to avoid. From you list, properties in Artarmon would be the highest cost compared to the others. you can chose suburbs with major train stations.
hope this helps

I don't think anyone is trying to create a microism of another country...
