If you see Ayers Rock, you pretty much have to pass Alice Springs anyhow. Alice Springs is worth a stopover to take a wander around as a night's break on the way to Ayers Rock but there isn't much there. If you visit Ayers Rock, go see The Olgas as well. Kings Canyon is close by (well relatively is close by but may still be a few hours away). Sydeny is worth a visit and there's lots to do in and around Sydney. People will tell you what's in Sydney (Opear House, Harbour, Bridge, Botanical Gardens etc) but it's also worth going out - Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves to name a couple of places. Canberra is also reachable for a night's stay.
What I'd do is stay a couple of weeks around Sydney. Allow about 4 or 5 days to visit Alice, Ayers Rock and The Olgas (2 days for Ayers Rock and The Olgas and a couple of days for flying in and out of Alice). |

I lived in Sydney for a year and a half and I've been to all of the places you mention. Here is what I would do.
Fly to Sydney and make sure you get out to Watson's Bay and Bondi and Bronte Beachs (Do the cliff walk between the two). Do the bridge climb on the Harbor Bridge. Take the ferry to the Toranga Zoo and Manly. Have lunch on the Circular Quay by the Opera House.
Fly up to Cairns and take trip out to Fitzroy Island. Snorkle on the Great Barrier Reef. Fly directly to Ayers Rock, see Alice Springs if you think you have time.
Fly back to Sydney. Get a rental car and drive South to Eden. Turn left on any road and find a spectacular pristine beach.
If you still have time drive North to Newcastle but find out who Yahoo Serious is before you go! |

It seems that most people who have answered your question were visitors, not residents.
I live an hour away from Newcastle and can honestly say that it is nothing special , unless you like watching big ships fill up with coal!! Sydney is awesome. There is a lot to see and do - take a tour of the opera house, walk the harbour bridge, visit the historic Rocks area. Darling Harbour (fairly central) has the Aquarium and Wildlife World next door, Star City Casino, Maritime Museum and take the Monorail for a quick view of it all. Close by is China town. There are also markets to visit. Outside of Sydney there are the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves and Canberra is not far either.
Have you considered other places in New South Wales like Byron Bay, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, etc. As it takes time to travel, staying in one state may mean you'll be able to see more.
Keep in mind that it is quite hot still when you are visiting, but if you can handle it, definately make the trip to see Alice Springs and Ayers Rock. It is quite different to places on the coast.
Thanks to those that mentioned it, being from North Queensland it is beautiful, but at the moment there is a cyclone, so visiting anywhere around there (Barrier Reef included) wouldn't be a good idea - stay south and keep safe and dry.

My hubby and I are going at Easter for just over 3 weeks ourselves, were staying with my relatives in Melbourne and they told us Sydney and Uluru are a must and the great barrier reef if we can fit that in too, hope you have a fantastic time and enjoy every minuet of it, I can't wait to go. |

Both Uluru and Ayers Rock are acceptable names for the rock. Uluru is the Anangu name for it. The Anangu people are the trditional owners of the Rock and their language is one of the Western Desert languages.
The word "abo" is as offensive to Aboriginal Australians as "****er" is to Americans. |

all have given you good advice, take note of all of it, oz is a gr8 place. i would say tho dnt go to newcastle as there is nothing to see there, its an industrial town. far better place to go in oz... if you can go to great keppel island just of the coast of rockhampton and yepoon. STUNNING have a great time. |

if u can handle the weather, The Northern Territory is stunning. Otherwise Perth is the place to go. The weather is perfect, the people are cruisy, the atmosphere is relaxed, the beaches are beautiful. But if the choice had to be made between Sydney, Newcastle,Ayers Rock and Alice springs id probably do Sydney and Ayers Rock. But Perth is the place to be for a chilled out relaxing holiday. |

Sydney - Taronga Zoo, climb the bridge and do the Harbour Jet. Alice Springs go to Bojangles Saloon and get your mates to buy you a beer over the net, Ayers Rock do the Sounds of Silence dinner. No idea about Newcastle sorry. |
