Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603 - October 10, 1659), who was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant. The first reported sighting of Tasmania by a Tasman was on November 24, 1642 and Able Tasman named the island, Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, after his sponsor. After the British landed and settled the area, to remove the stigma of the Dutch, the name was eventually changed to honor the first explorer to sight the land.

In 1642 a Dutch sea captain named Abel Tasman visited an island which he called Van Diemens Land. In 1855 this island was renamed Tasmania in honour of the man who discovered it. He was 40 years old when he discovered the land and he died at 57 years old. It was the last continent to be discovered.
