Steve Irwin was a humorous and lovable fellow with lots of fortitude. He expressed himself in a manner unlike any other zoologist of our time. Though taken before his time I believe he died doing what he loved most, being a daredevil humorist. |

Looks like most of the above are 'non fans', so I'll stick up for him.
Steve wasn't just a TV persona; a little known fact is that he spent a lot of money buying large tracts of land to retain as wilderness to avoid future development.
He also spent a lot of money on Australia Zoo's wildlife hospital, which was free for use by volunteer wildlife carers, and not just those who were affiliated with the zoo.
Volunteer wildlife carers spend a lot of their own money (as well as their time) on caring for orphaned or rehabilitating injured wildlife. To have free vet care is extremely welcome.
On the couple of occasions I met Steve he came across as a very genuine bloke.
For example, first time I met him, my wife & I had gone to the hospital with an injured flying fox, and whilst we were with the vet Steve burst through the door of the hospital looking for something, and saw the FF. "What's wrong with this little guy?" he said coming over to the table. He then introduced himself to us: "Hi, I'm Steve" he said, as if it was a surprise that we knew who he was. Took great interest in everything and us, and came across as pretty much the same enthusiastic person that you see on TV.
Sure, he made some of us cringe at some of his TV antics, but he sure got messages across and is sorely missed.

Nature won in the end. You can only persecute so many critters before one gets lucky. |

He was passionate about what he believed in. There's no other way to say it - some Aussies are embarressed by his over-the-top ways, but he did a lot of good for Australia and for the wildlife. At least he died doing something he was passionate about. |

Everyone I know thought he was a tool and we feel he got what was owed to him with that stingray. You can save nature without picking everything up and annoying it in front of a camera. |

check out what it has about him from his own zoo (I hate relying on Wikipedia)
He wanted people to have a love for animals like he did.
A friendly guy with sharp sence of humour
A great role model as a dad, too |
