No sorry we dnt ride kangaroos and we dnt own koalas. I think it would be cool if we did. That would be heaps fun!!! I think that having an emu as a pet would also be cool. Im just wondering... how did you get it???

OK, first thing you need to know about Australians - they will pull your leg at every opportunity. Everything they say will be "fair dinkum" or "straight up" - meaning that they are being truthful.

Only problem is, they know that non-Australians, Americans in particular, can be a bit gullible when it comes to Australia as few people have actually made it here. So they take the opportunity to tell little jokes like this.

It's their way of having a joke at your expense, so I wouldn't trust half the things they've told you.

Roos are pretty big creatures, and wouldn't like you being on their backs. We don't ride them. But we do run them over quite a lot - they act like rabbits when startled by headlights and stand still instead of moving out of the way. As a result, there are a few casualties each year from being run over by trucks, coaches and cars. But there are some 60 million of them, more than the people in the country. So we're not about to make them extinct.

Australia has all the same modern amenities that the USA and UK has (except for a decent internet infrastructure...)

Coast to coast, Perth to Sydney is about the same as LA to NY, and it would take an awful long time to get anywhere by kangaroo. That's if you can find one - they mostly live in the arid parts of the country, way inland. The cities are on the coastal fringe, where 85% of Australians live.

Although Wikipedia is not always entirely accurate, the article on Kangaroos is pretty reliable if you want some proper information about roos.

hahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahah everyone should be saying yes!!!! geez, it's obvious how gullible Americans are and if we tell too many the real answer we won't be able to trick them anymore!
lol, oh well, i don't know about kangaroos, but we do have a croc problem now that Steve Irwin is gone and we wake up to find the roos in our backyard! echidnas are always on our front doorsteps and we have to be careful not to tred on them.
oh yeah!! and emus are the best animals to race for money.
platypus tails are a very yummy delicacy!!

if you are American,
Australians get the idea that you guys;
-are morbidly obese
-total hicks that wear overalls all the time
-freaky christian perfect people
-run around with guns killing everyone.

and im pretty sure its not really like that. but thats the stereotypes we get. its the same for us. I hate kangaroos, and they are in the bush, not many of us live in the bush.

dftm
Americans must be the dumbest people on this planet. This is a country that really believes that it runs the planet. Asking that question is like asking you, " did you really vote for George Bush ". The thing is, you have to answer yes to that question, while we can treat you with the contempt that you deserve. The rest of the world is laughing at you, not with you. You are a fool.

They were tricking you. Some people here think people fall for everything. No, we do not ride around on kangaroos. They stand onn two feet, so it wouldn't be that easy. And they're actually dangerous. Not a long while back, a lady got badly wounded by a attack from one. They're not like Skippy

Aussie the 2nd
I can't believe how rude these answers are ! Of course we ride kangaroos ....if we can't find our camels that is !

Are you aware that Australian camels have the purest bloodlines in the world & we now export them to the oil rich arabs for racing !

Really , kangaroos are the most damn uncomfortable ride ever ...you can imagine can't you ? All that bouncing up & down !

Nono24
You are an ignorant moron. That is the most american bred stereotype of australians there is. No we don't ride Kangaroos. They are taller then six feet and are capable of ripping you limb from limb in seconds. Read a book instead of asking questions that make you look stupider then you are.

I'm not a jerk, I was born and raised here, so I know they are full of it. They are being really serious cause they know you will believe it.

Don't feel too bad, A lot of us get our jollies from telling ridiculous stories to foreigners. I suppose it's our way of getting a laugh from people not knowing too much about Australia. One of my favourite stories is about Drop Bears,,,"No-one has ever seen a Drop Bear and Lived to tell about it." We also have Yowies and don't start me on the other dangerous animals. Have a look

p.s. My Boss lives about 30 mins from the centre of Brisbane, and he actually does have Kangaroos in his back yard (True)

think before you ask... really... how on earth can we ride a kangaroo of all creatures... not only would it be extremely uncomfortable but also just plain stupid... think about it.. kangaroos bounce, very high.. we would fall off.. and most likely get trampled by said kangaroo..
but
if you really want.. you can try riding one and us Australians will watch and quietly snigger as you fall dramatically to the ground

We absolutely do not ride kangaroos. There is simply no adequate position for a saddle. Instead we use the kangaroos to pull carts. Kangaroo-drawn vehicles still outnumber cars in all but the largest cities.

Mandipperous
lmao to the first answerer. No, of course not. They live in the middle or the outback of austrlia, which means that most people don't even see them. Australia's main cities are all on the coast of the country, and the middle/outback is partly desert too. So yeah, it's rare for city folk to even see a kangaroo, we go to zoos/ sanctuaries for that, let alone ride one. And I think it would hurt the animal, as kangaroos pretty much stand on two legs, like us, so yeah. they are not horses.
Besides, we do have cars n stuff - hope you knew that.

He's gone fishing.
Don't stress, there are many nasty replies here. There is no such thing as a stupid question if your genuinely do not know the answer. No we don't ride the roos for transportation. However, we shoot them, we eat them and we frequently run our cars into them (By Accident), as they are stupid and jump onto the road. Kangaroos can get aggressive sometimes and attack people. The large male roos can grow to 6 foot tall and if they stand their ground are quite capable of killing dogs. A roo will swim into a pond/creek/river and let the attacking animal follow, it will them hold the animal under water to drown it. That is true. They are quite good swimmers. If you have a few Aussie mates they will tell you stories about here, some will have an element of truth to them and other will be complete bullshit. As mentioned above, I live in a country NSW town and we do have roos in the backyard. We also get Brown and Tiger snakes too. All the best.

Americans wouldn't have a clue about Australia unless they have been here. Its nothing compared to what you think. & we have bus's trains & trams, we don't need kangaroos. typical stereotype. what else do you Americans think? we have a BBQ for dinner every night and we all talk like bogans and drink VB ? well we don't. Maybe you should come here and see for youself, its a beautiful place :)

If you look at the shape of a kangaroo you'll realise it's not possible for anyone to get on one, let alone ride it.

We don't keep emus as pets either, although I understand it's legal to do this in America. Here's a website which gives some suggestions about keeping them, as they can be dangerous creatures: http://www.ehow.com/how_2057360_keep-emu-as-pet.html I do hope your emus have plenty of space to run around, they shouldn't be penned up all the time.
