The Great Barrier Reef runs up the coast of Queensland about 1,243 miles. It then ends at the Torres Straight, just before Papua New Guinea. The Great Barrier Reef covers an area of 132,819 sq miles.

The city you mean is probably Cairns, or maybe Townsville both are in Far North Queensland.

Other cities to visit would be Sydney and Melbourne. They are very different to each other. Really, it's unfair of me to pick out those two. All Australian towns and cities are worth a visit. They all have their good and bad points.

Canberra, the capitol, is interesting, and Perth on the west coast is a very attractive city. If your budget is limited, just make it Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra. Darwin is very humid and warm most of the time. I didn't care for it much.

Sydney, the Gold Coast and definitely Tropical Cairns !

Must see the Great Barrier Reef here.

I guess it depends on what you want to do.

Sydney and Melbourne are Australias biggest cities, both have a lot of similarities and a lot of differences too. You may find you don't feel the need to see both. Also, if you are travelling internationally, you are most likely to arrive in one of these towns so its a good starting point. My personal preference is Sydney, you'll enjoy seeing the Australian icons (Harbour Bridge and Opera House).

If you want to see the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is probably the best point to do that from. You could also go to Townsville, but you might find there are more flights to Cairns. Also, Cairns has some great attractions in the area, including the Daintree Rainforest.

For your final city, you have a lot of choices. If this will be your only visit to Australia I'd recommend Alice Springs so you can see Uluru and experience the Australian outback. Or you could go to the Gold Coast (where I live :D) and experience the beaches. They really are some of the best in the world.

So...
Sydney - Major City, see Harbour Bridge and Opera House
Cairns - see Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reed
Alice Springs - see Uluru and Aussie Outback [If you dont' want the heat and want the beach, go to the Gold Coast instead].

Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin

Darwin is humid in the wet season but not in the dry season. Cairns is humid all year round but worse in the wet season. Townsville is a bigger city than Cairns and has many attractions including Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef.

Unless you are into tackiness, screaming kids and theme parks, avoid the Gold Coast.
