Tipping in Australia??

I'm an American, so I'm used to tipping 20% of all my food when I eat out at a restaurant. I'm going to Australia next week, what is the customary tipping rule down under? Do I tip 20%, do I not tip at all, do I simply round up to the next dollar? What's the tipping rule in Australia?

Don't be shy. Keep tipping.
You will be loved more.

Most people don't tip at all. However some round the bill up a bit to the nearest $5 or $10, or a few people add around 10%. It is certainly not necessary - the norm in Australia is not to tip. The staff are paid well, an adult will receieve at least $15-$20/hr. You also don't need to tip anyone else such as taxi drivers, in fact taxi drivers will sometimes round the bill down a little.

I hope tipping doesn't creep into Australia, I think a system where the price is upfront and fair fo all staff is a much better system.

It is against our custom to tip. Australians earn a high minimum wage compared to America. The least a casual employee over 21 would earn is $20 per hour. There is no expectation of tips.

Some companies have a policy banning tips, the reasons for this would include, theft, lack of equality/fairness between staff, and expectations for said tip (i.e. sexual favors). Many companies do not allow tipping and some allow tips under $100, but are supposed to be reported to management. Taking tips is at your own risk.

Occasionally if dining at a restaurant customers will round up the bill to the nearest $10, but it is not at all expected. No one expects to recieve tips, you are already paid and expected to do a good job regardless.

I work at a local racetrack in the gambling area, occasionally if punters have a big win they might leave you a $10 tip, but most of the time your lucky to get the 65cents change. I dont expect tips but it is nice when I get a small tip. Our employer is rather contradicted in the recieving of tips, at one stage you must report anything over $100, at others its forbidden and management tell you, if you accept tips its at your own risk. It would be odd to receive more then $20 tips in one day.

I have also worked in a bottleshop, where the policy was if you recieved any tip management had to be informed, management took these tips. It was up to their discretion if they let you have the tip or not.

My suggestions is not to tip unless you find somewhere has offered you exceptional service, then you can offer it, but don't be offended if they reject the offer.

We usually dont tip. Maybe at a fancy restaurant just to show off.

It's optional, generally you would only tip in restaurants and cafes, as much or as little as you like. 15 years ago tipping was non existent here.

No you do not need to tip in Australia, I'd never even heard of the practice until I started speaking t people who had been to America! Minimum wage is higher here simply so that people do not have to stuff around calculating tips, the more a restaurant charges the higher the quality of service should be.

John W
No need to tip, but it is appreciated. But don't feel obligated to in any way - the staff here earn much more than your counterparts over there.

If you do want to tip, generally round the bill amount up to an even dollar amount amounting to APPROX 10% of the bill. If my bill was $36 and I was happy with the service, I would probably pay $40... that kind of thing..

Dont tip! Thats one thing that makes you stand out like a tourist. Also, the tax system here does not allow for tips, so any tips go into the pocket 100%. I understand that in the US they assume you are going to be tipped so you pay a larger % of tax on your wage.

Mrs M
It is completely optional and not expected. Most restaurants etc will have a tips glass on the counter for you to throw change into if you are feeling generous.

If someone has given you exceptional service then feel free to tip, but they might be a little surprised if you do.

I think it is really rude of anyone to expect a tip. You pay enough for restaurant food as it is.

unless the service is amazing dont tip.... if you do they will be very grateful but unlike US service staff get paid reasonable rates and dont expect tips.. a bonus if it occurs though but you really dont have to at all

Elizabeth
We usually only leave a tip for really exceptional service.
The only tipping rule here is that normally we don't tip anyone.

We expect to pay the price on the menu and not have to add any percentage just for people doing the job they are paid to do.

molly
We don't traditionally tip in Australia but I live in a port city where we had lots of USA navy boats come for R&R and tipping was always appreciated.
Some employers don't like it so you can say to them that's to buy the staff a drink for all their good work tonight.
Hope you have a ball and don't forget to slip, slop, slap.

Oxl
Tip how you would in the US.
