Go for it on your own hun!

I did the Australia thing two years ago (regret comin home) and I met TONNES of lone females, who had as much if not MORE fun than those who had mates with them.

Remember being with mates is good at times,but what if you wanna do something and they dont? Its handier just to up and do your own thing with out consulting any mates, but you will meet loads of people on your travels!So dont fret over it.

It really depends on how much time you have and what you want your focus to be. If it's volunteering, there are a ton of websites that focus on ecotourism so you go exploring in your offtime and get to know the local culture. But if you want to work to gain money along the way, that's going to be tough in other countries since you'd need a temporary worker visa.

Is there a particular culture that you're drawn to like South American, Australian, African or European? My very first solo travels were in my 20s and I went to Europe first because I knew that my language skills (or lack thereof) wouldn't be a problem. I went to New Zealand on my own last December and had an amazing trip. I spend some time in Auckland, the down to Christchurch and then onto Queenstown where I started a hike of the Southern Alps with an organized group. I met so many interesting people along the way and did a lot of farm stays which only cost 20 NZ dollars a night as long as I fed the sheep in the morning!

I'm female and travel alone a lot. As far as safety goes, common sense and an awareness of your surroundings will go a long way. I've never had a back experience in 20 years but I have been nervous at times and just listen to that inner voice and get to a safer place.

Here's a good website that offers some advice on getting temporary work during a gap year. It sounds like you've already done a lot of research but it's just one more resource for you. Have a great time whatever you decide to do!

id like to tell you that this side of the world is safe but unfortunately it is not. i think as long as you dont hitch and stay at youth hostels you will be fine. there are lots of seasonal jobs in oth aussie and kiwiland money not great but o.k. also some jobs give you a place to stay

Firstly I want to reassure you despite what people might tell you about travelling is that you have nothing to worry going on your own.

I went out on my own last year for 12 months to Australia, NZ and Asia etc. You might feel as though you want to go with somebody now but believe me going on your own will be the best thing you could ever do. Because when you get out there you'll see that everyone else is on their own. You can do what you want, when you want and your not restricted by anyone else.

In terms of looking on websites and on what to do etc don't book any trips or tours etc before you leave home that way your not restricted or bound by anything which you might later regret.

Just book your flight and some nights accommodation to start with, decide where your going to fly to and go with an open mind and things will just happen for you I promise! There are plenty of opportunities out there for work, volunteering etc. I know it feels overwhelming but once your out there you'll be go glad you did it... it's just taking the step and doing it that's the hardest.

If I were you, I would do it by car or train so that way you can enjoy the scenery as you go!!!! You cant see whats on the ground if you are 30,000 feet up in an airplane. If you ever come to California I would do the Amtrak from San Diego up to Oakland or San Francisco and then take the California Zephyr (Amtrak) from Oakland to Chicago. From what I understand it goes through some beautiful countryside and its well worth the trip.

I think backpacking it. It cheap they have bus and trains and stuff where you can buy so many passes and hope on the transport to take you places. Good luck

Lots of commercial companies for single travellers.

I'm travelling to NZ (South Island) at Xmas for a trip with Active New Zealand. Then I have a layover in Tahiti onthe way back to the USA.

It can be intimidating , travelling alone - and it may be easier for me as a guy, to travel alone. But it's not impossible for women to travel alone too - I've met women on my travels that are doing just that. I was in Australia (NSW & SA) for the Olympics (stayed in Redfern, safely).

I'd suggest you start with an organised trip. Figure out where you want to go & what you want to do (e.g. high altitude trekking, shopping, dining, hang-gliding, or whatever), then find a company that has an organised trip to do just that.

The activities trips are quite good - tend to cater to single travellers. The only problem trip will tend to be cruises - they (almost) always cater to couples & it can get might expensive in a hurry.

I'm 43yo & over the last 20 years I've been to Morocco, Belize, Mexico, Canada, Australia, UK, France & Russia. Plus lots of trips within the USA.
