Definitely base yourself in Sydney, it is in the centre of lots of beautiful places that you can go for day / weekend trips.

Travel to the Gold Coast (QLD) just take care when backpacking, try to hook up with some other backpackers or traveler's before you leave on your sightseeing.

There are some beautiful places North of Sydney, and also South down to Melbourne (take the coast road and you will see more)

Invest in a small tent as there are so many camp grounds around with good amenities and site fees are really cheap.

It's always good to investigate places before you go so try a few sites:

Happy tavels and enjoy our gorgeous country!!!

You actually need a working visa to work here in Australia legally. I live in Sydney so I guess I could be biased in recommending Sydney.

Hey Dan,

I also went to Australia with a working holiday visa and spent a week and a half in Sydney and then traveled up to the Gold Coast. Sydney is gorgeous, and being the biggest city there should be good job opportunities for you there. If you are looking for a good place to visit for your vacation time though the Gold Coast area is phenominal, it is a cluster of cities all along the East coast of mainly South Queensland and with 50km of beach lining along it you will be happy anywhere in there. Surfers Paradise is the main tourist type area which I was close to (Southport) and that area of the Gold Coast is phenominal, not to too much in the way of jobs there though.

A bit North of Surfers Paradise you will find North Stradbroke island (and South) and this is a fantastic place to travel to as well. You can book all your activities, dining, accommodation, and all that through Stradbroke Getaways at http://www.stradbrokegetaways.com which is in Cleveland and from there you can take a ferry to North Stradbroke island called Sea Breeze through the Big Red Cat, there website is http://www.seastradbroke.com

Have fun!

perth is a hole
melbourne is boring cause ive lived here all my life
if you like the nightlife go to sydney.
M,elbournes good for festivals heaps of hippie fests down here in the summer. Stkilda is a cheap place to stay they have a backpackers place and its near shops/ food and close to the city too.
here in melb were got fed square, which contains boring free video and visual art galleries we have vic market in the city
which is stuff ..in a market.
we have heaps of clubs, which are ok.
we have stkilda bay which is always cold and not that great.
sydney has the opera house which is overrated.
perth is full of warehouses for clothes. Go to qld. surfs heaps better there, beach is better, its more relaxed water is beautiful there.
