hi there
you will be very safe living in Australia, i'm not sure how it compares to Ireland but Australia is much safer than the UK. You just don't get the same level of street crime and violence in Australia as you would in London.
If I were you I would start off in Sydney it is the biggest city and has great combination of city and beach all in one. That will give you a good taste of what Australia has to offer and if you don't like it you can always move on to another city. Melbourne is very European and very beautiful but the weather can be a bit crap (much like London you can get 4 seasons in one day). Brisbane and Perth are both very nice and laidback but as they are smaller it can be harder to meet people.
The best thing to do would be to live in some sort of share house accommodation so you can meet other australians and start to make friends that way. check out www.realestate.com.au that site has a share accommodation section.
work is also a great way to meet people so make sure you are working somewhere that has a lot of other employees and not a little company.
Coming from Europe you would love living in Australia as the climate is very different, but the culture and people are quite similar.
Don't worry about going on your own I moved from Brisbane to London last year and didn't know anyone in London and have now met some of the most amazing people and have had wonderful experiences. You'll find that you will meet other people in the same situation as you and will make instant friendships because you have a lot in common. You won't regret it! |

Don't put your plans off because you have to travel alone. I've been travelling to different places in Australia alone many times. You will make so many new friends and you'd be absolutely safe. Go for it! |

sooooooooooooooooooooo go its totally safe n honest everywhere u go u will meet other Irish... maybe start in Bondi its totally FULL of irish also known as Co. Bondi so u are bound to meet loads of people there to hang out with, usually backpackers start in sydney and travel up the east coast so here u will find someone who is going ur direction!! car sharing is an option ( we managd to get a free car off people who were going home me met 3 randomers n the 5 of us travelled the coast)
hostels are the best way of meeting fellow backpackers, they are also very safe, u can get female only dormes or rooms that are smaller for just a couple of $ extra! the greyhound bus travells the east coast form sydeny n u can stop off anywhere along the way!
working doing seasonal/ tempory work is again people in the same situation as u so u will meet soooo many people from all over the world
I cant tell u enough how much fun backpacking oz is honestly dont be afraid of going on ur own u will meet so many new friends from all around the world n have the time of ur life!!!

If you are wanting to go on a working holiday, travelling by yourself is the best way to go. That way you can make your own decisions on where you go and how long you stay. If you want to follow some randon guy/girl to Byron Bay there is no-one holding you back. If you are travelling by yourself hostels are the best place to stay as you will met new people almost immediately. If you find you don't like travelling by yourself, you can generally hook up somebody that is heading the way you want to go next. |

As long as you use commonsense , don't hitchhike , use public transport & take care when drinking in bars , clubs etc you will be fine . |

You would be safe here and you might even meet people here that you can travel with.People are generally friendly here and a lot like to travel.I don't see anything wrong with traveling on your own you might just be extra careful around night clubs and night places.I say go for it while you can and enjoy your time. |

No different than anywhere else. Sydney could be LA or New York. You want to make a connection or two, try the Couchsurfing site... |

i live in melbourne and i think your biggest danger would be keeping the guys away from you, we love the irish since many of us originally came from there.
it's pretty safe here, we've been having a few problems with fights in some of the more trashy city night clubs but personally i've not seen anything like that. i feel perfectly safe walking down the city streets at 3am to change clubs or get a taxi. people will stop and chat to you and if you're lost people are always nice giving directions.
on a day by day basis i never see any crime. no robberies or drive bys! all in all it's a pretty safe place and i hope if you come you'll like it! |

I think you would be fine by yourself. Perth is pretty safe and friendly. As long as you let your family know where you are going before hand and set up contact times, then you will be able to let others know you are safe. |
