UK to Australia/New Zealand immigration, anyone done it? |
I'm a UK plumber, I'm seriously considering immigrating to either Australia or New Zealand on the skilled migration program. Has anyone here made the bold move? How did it work out? Which Country did you choose? Were you accepted in the new community? Did you find work easily enough? Any information would be most appreciated. Additional Details Great answers so far, keep them coming.
A gas engineer friend of mine and I will be going to the expos, we are talking about going to Oz/NZ together. thanks for that.
We need as much information as possible. |

I'm Australian born and bred and would never live anywhere else. I've been on holidays to New Zealand and its just so much behind the times.
I would strongly suggest Australia, you will be accepted in the community, there are alot of brits in Australia. As a skilled worker you wont have much trouble finding work either.
These are some other questions people looking at migrating to Australia have asked that you might find helpful.

hey there. i havent actually done it myself bt.. my bor in law did it last october, he went over as a techinician on a 12 month working visa, to which he would be able to get an extension of another twelve if all went well and then after that he could aply for residencey..... hes been there 6 months now, but.......
coming towards xmas last yr, he was anxious to come home, he didnt like it at all. but saying that he hadnt realy given it much chance and booked his plane ticket for april this yr to come home. whats funny about it is i spoke to him last week and he now has changed his mind about wanting to stay and liking it. hes finds work really easily over there( i say over there i mean austrailia).....he also finds it easy to find acomodation which is always handy.he says hes made plenty of mates to socialise with ( and hes shy so thats gud)..at the moment he took time out from work to travel round the counrty which he loves right now. i say go for it, give it all you can, expect the worse accept the best and ya life will follow what plan its meant. good luck and i hope that helped. |

No, I have not done it, I was born here ... but if you are in the UK - how about going to the EXPO on Immigration and Working in Australia? Its on next month. http://www.expo-australia.com
As mentioned Immigration will be there to answer and help with your questions and move, there will be job offers to for the skilled people with occupations that Australia is short on. Will be worth a visit!
Plumber is on the skilled shortage list (see here) http://www.workingin-australia.com/info/463 so that's a big plus for you!
NZ also has an expo coming up http://www.expo-newzealand.com
Heaps of info on both sites to see if it's viable for you
Good Luck |

I'm moving to New Zealnd when I'm older and my mu's friend has emigrated to Australia and I've watched loads of programmes about UK citizens emigrating to Australis. Definitely do it I'd say- they have such gorgeous landscapes and the housing is so cheap! On a programme I watched a midle class UK family bought a seriously nice house out there and my mums friends son (family have emigrated there) is 20 and is having a gorgeous hosue built! It may seem scary at first but if there's an opportunity in life to do something worthwhile then I think it's worth snatching up. Don't feel worried about leaving family behind. My uncle also just emigrated there and visits for a few weeks once a year- he loves it out there and said it's one of the best decisions he's ever made. Don't think it, do it! |

Me and my wife came to NZ from Cheshire (well, closer to Manchester, to be fair), and we're pretty chuffed with our choice even today. We chose NZ over Oz because we don't like it hot, we prefer green, and we're freaked out by spiders and snakes.
We had jobs waiting for us (lecturer and nurse), and we had more friends and went to more parties within the first week of our arrival than I can remember attending in a year before coming to NZ.
My advice to you would be to bring cars from the UK. I could kick myself I didn't bring our Volvo and Saab along, they cost so much more here used (I had bought these cars for under 1k pounds each, and here, they would have been worth more like NZ$ 10.000). |

I lived in Melbourne for a number of years, didn't like it, and returned to London in 1994. I wasn't happy at all in Australia, and I'd never go back.
I've visited NZ on holiday and the people seem a little more laid-back than Aussies so if you're desperate to go I'd recommend NZ over Australia. |

My husbands cousin just moved to Australia from the UK... I'm an American trying to get my citizenship in the UK and it's pretty hard and I know that NZ is incredibly strict about their immigration rules and policies! I plan on moving there too... But back to the cousin, he said that he had 2 years to prove that he was able to work and improve along with support himself completely otherwise he would be deported and have no chance of coming back.... As for acceptance I don't see why they wouldn't accept you ... After all most Australians were from Britain to begin with |

I'd choose NZ every time. Australia soon won't have enough water for you to plumb. |
