Unusual & interesting leaving present for someone going to Australia? |
A friend is heading off for an extended holiday down under. Any ideas what I can get her for an unusual and interesting present? I'd like something that she'll be able to use on the journey, that's linked to Australia and isn't a Rough Guide/Lonely Planet. |

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but there's a great book called, "In A Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson. It chronicles his visits to Australia in a very comedic way. I read it while travelling around Australia and found it a great read as it was hilarious to be reading another "outsider's" opinion of some really strange things about a sometimes strange country. I'm not very good at reviewing books, but check out the reviews on Amazon to see if it's something your friend would like.
Also, a blank book to use as a journal to remember her trip is a must...if you and a few other friends were to even start it off by writing some good-byes and well wishes, I'm sure she'd love that. It'd give her something to read on the long flight there. |

Something that is not unusual, but useful, might be a note book so she can keep details and comments of her trip. she can also stick ticket stubs in, photos, etc. That way when she gets back, it will help her to remember what she did and she can show you too |

Buy her a boomerang and put a message with it telling her that you hope she comes back. You could even write on it. I am an Australian working in England for an extended time and we had friends do this for us. We thought it was really special and touching. Its probably something that she will never use, but you never know!
A boomerang is like a frisbie but when you throw it, it comes back to you in case you were sure as I don't know where you are from! |

How about a backpack with some badges sewn onto it, then if she is travelling around she has something to throw everything into.
The other idea, and I did for a friend when she travelled the UK was a mini photo album with photos of all her close friends and then on the reverse of the photo their home address, email address and phone numbers so that she could keep in touch. |

If you want something extremely unusual that is not generally of use at home, get her a fly net! This can be worn over her hat and stops the very large numbers of flies (found only in some parts of Australia at certain times of the year) crawling all over her face. It does look daft, but it's nowhere near as daft as those hats with corks - which only true tourists wear!
If you want to get something that she'll use a lot (and like more?), get her a sun hat (to wear under the flynet!).
PS: I'm very impressed that Clarabell's gran manages to get food past Aussie customs restictions. They are very strict about food stuffs and did a full search of my bags because they thought my paracetamol tablets were chocolates! |

Try some 30plus sunscreen, a towel, a hat and a good book that she can read on the flight on the way there, or on the beach while she's relaxing! |

I am Australian and trust me you dont want to get her something that she is going to be embarrassed by! Like the fly hat??? We dont really wear them here! Only the very very outback which is so far out in the middle of nowhere! Just by her something to remember home by! Or why not a map of Australia?? Talk to her and find out where she is going. If you at least no what part of oz that should help you a heap! Good Luck |
