Visiting Australia...any tips?

My husband and I have wanted to visit there for a long time and it finally seems to be working out. We are planning our first trip to Australia in the beginning of December for about 5-6 days. We were planning to go to Sydney mainly. We would appreciate any tips/suggestions/advice from natives or people who have visited there (where to stay, is sydney the best place to go first time, what are the best/must do activities, wine tasting, weather, any other ideas about deals/offers). We are semi-adventurous and love to explore new things.

We are really excited and hope we cover the best of the best in this short time. Thanks.

Biggest tip is to relax, have a good time. Try a harbour tour. There is heaps to do in Sydney. you could hire a houseboat on the harbour and that would cover accommodation and help with sight seeing. Why dont you check out www.sydney.com. its full of offers and lists thousands of things to do. Enjoy your stay!

Hi there,

I'm born and breed in Australia and have tripped around a fair bit! Sydney is worth casting your eyes but:

Bondi beach may be the most famous beach in Australia and Sydney the most famous city however, they are far from the most beautiful!

Sydney is just another city and Bondi is just another beach!

If you want to see something special I recommend the Northern side of the East Coast of Australia. My favourite places would have to be Dunk Island and the Daintree Rainforest:

http://www.dunk-island.com/

&

http://www.silkyoakslodge.com.au/

Both within close vicinity of each other. All you have to do is catch a plane to Cairns Airport and arrange your transfers either through the airport or Voyages (see the links I have provided above).

If you can afford it, see these places! This is the real Australia! You will see Australian wild life, scenery and people! In Sydney you will see...well, a city.

By the way - look for cheaper rates at wotif.com - you can get both Dunk Island and Daintree accommodation here!

Good luck! It would be great to know what you decide to do - how exciting!

When we went for a holiday to Sydney, we went on the double decker bus tour. It went all around Sydney & Bondi, stopped at all the places that any tourist would want to go & it was hop-on hop-off so you could get off at any stop, have a browse and hop back on the next one. I think they go past the stops like every half an hour. And its pretty cheap two. Thats what i wud recomment anyway!

Like Gloria mentioned, spend one day on the red double decker bus tour. Do a day tour to the Hunter Valley if you are into wine. Do a day tour to the Blue mountains if you want some spectacular scenery/bush walking etc. Take the local ferries around - it's a great way to experience the harbour and much cheaper than getting on a tourist boat. Maybe go to Manly or to Tooronga Zoo (which has spectacular views of the harbour itself). There is a blue bus which does a similar thing to the red bus around the Northern Beaches. Check out Bondi. The Rocks or Darling Harbour are good places to go out in the evenings/lots of restaurents. The weather should be pretty warm in December (start of Summer). The Rocks is a great location to stay if you can afford it. It is close to the Opera House and Harbour bridge and walking distance to the main ferry terminals. Take in a show at the Opera House one evening. Go for a big walk through the Botanical Gardens (great views). There are so many things to do in Sydney. Good luck trying to fit them in in only 5-6 days.

I'm a Melbourne-girl, so as a visitor to Sydney I would definitely recommend you spend one day at the Hunter Valley. Your hotel concierge should be able to recommend a tour group. The tours usually leave after breakfast, and return you to your hotel by dinner. The Hunter Valley is a fascinating area - if you're into wines. And it will also give you the opportunity to see a bit more of the countryside; rather than just hanging around Sydney.

Obviously, you will need to head over to The Rocks and see the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Then there is the prerequisite Sydney Harbour ferry trip - with brilliant vantage points for snaps of these two icons.

I'd also suggest you head up Sydney Tower for more spectacular views.

Finally, Doyle's (Watson's Bay) is synonymous with Sydney, and a must if you love seafood.

As for hotel suggestions - it doesn't matter where you go, December is peak and it's going to be expensive. But when I'm in Sydney, I love to stay at the Novotel (Darling Harbour). It's handy to downtown Sydney, the monorail, and right on Cockles Bay, where there are some fabulous restaurants.

I must tell you that the 5-6 days will barely be enough to see a little bit of Sydney. In that short time it would be good to see the Blue Mountains, the Sydney Opera House,a couple of nice beaches and Taraonga Zoo.Where you stay depends on your budged because you can go from backpackers style accommodation to 5 star hotels.December is our high season so you would need to book early.
