PS There ARE places named Hampshire and York. They are in England, and yes the states are named for these places. Ever heard of the Duke of York? or the Duchess?

named after the Dutch Province of Zeeland

If you think it is odd that an island on the other side of the world with no cultural connection to the netherlands is named after some part of hollad, it was named by Dutch explorer Able Tasman (tasmania is named after him).

There's a Zealand in Denmark and a Zeeland in the Netherlands. New Zealand was named after the one in the Netherlands. Hampshire is a county in the south of England. York is a city in the north of England.
